Dear group
I would like to hot-backup my machines from my ESX 3.0 server. I have No Virtual Center..
I'm thinking about having a shared vol on my NetApp.
To this I would backup my hot machines through ESX snapshot backup (VCB ? )
Then from my Windows 2003 server i would connect to the VOL with software iSCSI and backup the files.
I have it working with Windows seeing the vol fine and formatting it to NTFS. But then ESX can't use it. And I have it working the other way round - but then my Windows can't see VMFS files.
I this possible in any way ?
Thanks !

This is for iSCSI as from your environment, FC is another story but concepts are the same.
When you install VCB proxy software on a Windows server you have to install also the Microsoft iSCSI initiator before. With or without VCenter you need a VCB license installed on each ESX host. You don't need to share the volume containing the VMFS datastore on some NetApp LUN.
Put the Windows host iSCSI iqn in the same igroup you've created to put in the ESX server's iqn of their iSCSI hba. You've then to configure the MS initiator simply to connect/login to the iSCSI port of your filer: at this point you have to see under the disk management MMC of the Windows server some partitions 'other type/unknown": these are the VMFS stores. The virtual adapter of VCB in this way will permit you to browse the VMFS volumes and their contents to back up the VMs at file or image level: in both cases you need enough space on the VCB server to host a cache of the vmdk. At file level backup you need exactly the content of virtual disks, at image level only the real occupied blocks of the vmdk will be cached.
Together with the TR that Andy suggested you take care of the TR3428 and TR3515.

Instead of using VCB, why not use VMWare snapshots in conjunction with NetApp snapshots and simply snapshot the volume. Then you can use iSCSI initiator to map the snapshot-LUN from another host and back it up to tape, or if NFS, export it to pretty much ANY host and back it up to tape.
