Hi all
as far as I understood the thursby products, DAVE is CIFS Client for MacOS not an nfs Client software. Using netapp filer with cifs-only license, I can install DAVE on any Mac, that need access to the filer and it works. There is one restriction I read about with DAVE and Filer: "You cannot add, change or remove ACLs from the Mac. All privileges are working on the macintosh and the mac is integrated on the NT domain as NT workstation." (??) This requires a NT Domain Controller. You need OnTap Version 5.3 or newer and DAVE 2.5 or newer.
The nfs Client Software from Thursby is called MACnfs.

Jim,
I work for a NetApp reseller and have been involved in a few implementations with Mac clients.
There's two ways to look at the issue. Do you want the Macs to "talk" directly to the NetApp or do you want them to go through an NT domain?
In the first case, there are several third party NFS client software apps for Mac that work well. The DAVE client from Thursby systems is one that I'm familiar with. Remember that this requires an NFS license on the Filer and means you have to manage an NFS style database or mapping to the NT domain.
The other case requires you to put the Mac clients in the NT domain and map the drives from the Mac directly. Two ways to look at this: 1) "Force" the Macs to "talk/interpret" in the NT space. 2) "Force" the NT domain server to "talk/interpret" for the Macs. The second option requires much overhead because you need to "reshare" the Filer's NT shares through the NT server with Mac services. (Remember - you can't install Mac services for NT on the Filer).
On an additional note... The latest Macintosh OS (version 10) is built on a UNIX kernel and has the NFS client built into it. So the NFS solution may be best for the future. (After buying the Filer's NFS license - of course).
Hope this helps.

I would like to pose a question. Has anyone had to incorporate Mac clients into an NT domain from Novell ? Using a Netapp filer as the storage medium for such. I am looking at moving these clients files from a Novell server to the Netapp. I have read the 'NT' material on what needs to be done as far as the files being put on an 'NT' server. But am unsure of what needs to be done to make it work with Netapp. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
