Agreed... Making it an option would be a much cleaner solution.
It's all these changes/weirdnesses etc. that is causing me to not even consider moving to the 6.5 series yet. I plan on staying with 6.4.x for quite a while longer, until the rest of the changes/bugs/etc have been found and ironed out.

One thing to be remembered in all of this discussion is that the export changes were driven by customer requests. So, what one customer may not like, some other customer *had* to have in the code.
So why not an "option auto_update_exports off" ???
