Hi toasters,
i am wondering if anybody has an official overview of netapps controller hardware, and espacially the CPU types.
I found different sources telling me different things. e.g. i found an article on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetApp_Filer) saying that the FAS6040 is one die with dual-core. A poster from netapp states that it has two single-core dies.
Can anybody sched some light onto this?? My biggest interesst is how the FAS6040 compares to the FAS6030.
Regards
Jochen

Here's some data on the 6030:
http://www.spec.org/sfs97r1/results/res2006q2/sfs97r1-20060425-00258.html 2.6-GHz AMD Opteron(tm) 852 4 cores, 4 chips, 1 core/chip (The 6030A is a clustered pair, so 2 cores, 2 chips per head)
The total results don't have a 6040, though:
http://www.spec.org/sfs97r1/results/sfs97r1.html
and very little NetApp on the new sfs2008 benchmark so far:
Until next time...

Hi guys,
so thanks a lot for all the replies...
To put things to an end and summarize the results:
FAS6030 and FAS6040 are quite the same compared to CPU specs (still not 100% sure about the layout :D) The biggest difference seems to be the onboard FC is 2Gbit on the 6030 and 4Gbit on the 6040.
Thanks again for your time and regards
Jochen

From what I understand the confusion is due to Netapps terminology.
They'll say '4 CPUs' when really they mean 2 physical CPU's each with 2 cores. They'll also say '2 CPUs' with regard to their older kit pre multi-core chips.
I believe our 3040's and 6070's are all single core processors and 6080's are dual core, not that helps answer your question much ;-)

I've got a 6040A (2 heads configured for high availability), and here's the important part of the RLM log:
#### Portions Copyright (c) 2005 Network Appliance, Inc. All Rights Reserved BIOS Version: 1.5X1
CPU= AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 252 X 2 Testing RAM. 512MB RAM tested 16384MB RAM installed Fixed Disk 0: STEC NACF1GM1U-B11 ####
According to AMD's documentation the Opteron 252 is available in single or dual cores, the 6040 has single cores.
See this NetApp KB for authoritative information: https://now.netapp.com/Knowledgebase/solutionarea.asp?id=kb21345
As for RAM, the 6030 has 8GB and the 6040 has 16GB.
