- autonegotiation and duplex are fine, no errors reported on the switches - pure TCP/IP is fast (like http, ftp etc.) - the Win95 and NT 4.0 which are slow to NetApps are fast to NT fileservers

We currently have similar problems. Check network settings, in particular autonegotiation and duplex. Also check your WINS servers and PDC/BDC are functioning ok.

It does sound frighteningly like the problem we're seeing. One thing we're going to try is putting the ftp daemon on the netapp so we can prove that for a windows box that has problems with CIFS that it does/doesn't have the same problem with ftp to the filer. That should help prove if its network/OS or protocol related. You may like to try the same thing and report back
