Greetings to all...
Due to problems getting Veritas BackupExec 9.0 to play nicely with our 740 filer (can see the volumes and shares, but they are greyed out... tried using User Defined Selection and would get a pop-up saying it couldn't access the files). So, as we also use SyncSort Backup Express, we are trying to use NDMP, and now we come to the issue. By using NDMP, it doesn't appear that we can redirect our restores so our only choice is to restore over the top of the existing files. This raises another issue in that it appears that we couldn't do a restore to any other type machine than a Network Applicance NAS. We were hoping that in a disaster recovery situation, we could restore to Intel machine but I don't see where that's possible using NDMP. Is there a workaround for this? Can I get some insight here?

OnTap uses dump to write the data to tape (via NDMP). You can use a Solaris machine and ufsrestore to recover data off of tape. That's the only nonNetApp platform I've tried to recover data from a NetApp tape.
I think the only option (regardless of the backup software) is to overwrite files for NDMP, so you have to redirect to an alternate directory or NDMP host if you don't want to clobber your existing files (redirects work fine on Veritas NetBackup).
Your other option is not use NDMP to backup your filer. Backup via NFS or CIFS (CIFS if you have ACLs you want preserved).
I'd be surprised if Backup Express couldn't redirect though.

Paul,
It is certainly possible to redirect NDMP restores using Syncsort Backup Express. We support redirection to a different directory either on the same filer or an alternate one. In defining your restore, you can choose the alternate location you wish to restore to. Without this choice, the default is to restore the data to the original location.
With regard to the issue of restoring NDMP data to a different type of host machine, the basic problem is the format of the backup stream that is generated by a specific NDMP DATA server. While the protocol itself is open (this allows a backup stream generated from one NAS appliance to be directed to a tape device attached to a different vendor's device), the format of the stream itself is not mandated. To allow cross "platform" restores, it would be necessary for NDMP DATA server vendors to build decoding capabilities for other vendor stream formats into their products. While this might aid disaster recovery or migration efforts, it may raise some potential legal issues. A backup product itself should not face any difficulties in directing restores to a different NAS platform if these capabilities existed.
In order to restore NDMP data to open systems (Unix or Windows) hosts, there must be a NDMP DATA server running on that host, capable of decoding other vendor data stream formats. While Backup Express does include NDMP DATA and TAPE servers on open systems, it does not provide cross platform facilities.
I hope this helped.
