Hello,
I wonder if anyone out there has any experiences with running filers over WAN.
We are thinking about placing a filer about 600 Km from the users in a move to centralize the storage. The users would be connected via dual 622 Mbps ATM connection so the transfer speed should be OK but the question is if the latency would be acceptable and also how many users could you usefully have at the remote site. The filer would be running both CIFS and NFS.
Regards,

It really depends on the amount of latency you have if people notice or not. You don't mention if its a private link or a VPN, but assuming its a private link it shouldn't be a problem. Most office users will just want to browse the filer and load up office docs, for that the latency isn't really all that important. However if people are going load apps off it or run DB queries against it you might find the latency hurts.
