How do these work? Do they replace the existing power supply with two separate modules? Does one supply full power while the other is on standby, or do both supply half power during normal operation?

The way the RPS works (at least in the f540) is that you replace the existing power supply block with a new one that has a large umbilical cord attachment (somebody said it looks like an aircraft power rig). This umbilical cord then attaches to a unit with 2 power supplies and 2 power cords. The 2nd unit does the power switching.
It works. :)
