Is it just me or should netapp include hot fixes that it requires to install for windows.... I just grabbed 4.1 and have to call MS to to get the new hot fix patches... I suppose I could log into our premiere site and download them as well as call, but what If I didn't have a premiere agreement. Second to that they are requiring me to clearly install patches that have not been regression tested as of yet with MS........ opps. So every time someone calls to get these patches MS tells them not to install them on production boxes awesome....
In my opinion, It may be just you. Or hopefully, anyways...
Let me elaborate:
While I think it would be extremely convinient, NetApp doesn't write MS code. To change the point of view a bit: I wouldn't necessarily feel good about MS giving me access to a copy of ONTAP... (there are also legal ramifications to NetApp distributing code not written by them)
I definitely can understand your point about access to patches, and them being tested... However:
(Access)
It's not uncommon to have access to patches that are available via the Windows Update site that are of the same nature, from what I've seen. Not a lot of difference there... My experience with MS has shown that they often put patches on the 'premier' site that should be made available to the general public. Regardless, you can always open a case with MS and they should be able to provide you with the patch given that you will hit a bug without it.
(Tested)
MS has tested them to some degree, obviously. I know for a fact that NetApp has - otherwise, they wouldn't be able to require it such as they do (some of this statement is going on fatih, but a vast majority is going on personal experience).
Maybe a better question would be: why does MS release the product with the bugs in it already? The patches SnapDrive typically requires deal strictly with the operational nature of VSS, MSCS, Logical Disk Manager, etc...
