I'm a Legato NDMP user and would also be interested in what you find for this mysterious "vendor supplied tape reader" I've been able to recover files from tapes that have exceeded their browse and retention policy by doing a Save Set Recover. This may have been an exception because the media was still in the media database (but recyclable) and save set information was still in the index. I was surprised this worked because I was under the impression that once the retention period was exceeded that the index entries got cleaned out - they did for files but not save set info.
