You could use a Linux box to mount the filer with NFS or SMB. Create a file that would be used as the compressed (or encrypted) filesystem on the filer. Use a special mount program to do the compression and to mount the filesystem.

Then export the filesystem from the Linux box as NFS and/or SMB.
