We seem only to be able to restore files, that were backed up from our Netapp 760 filer, to their original location on the Netapp. If I try to restore a file to a different location on the Filer, than the location that it was backed up from, I receive an error message saying that the machine is not running ndmp. And the restore fails.
Does anyone have experience with this?

We had similar problems with a configuration much like yours. We've had good results with budtool 4.6 + OnTap 5.1.2R3P1. We now restore files to different locations, and even to different filers without a problem.
On a related note, be sure that the ndmp passwords that budtool keeps are up-to-date. I had a situation where backups worked but permissions/ownerships were all wrong until the passwords were corrected with the btpasswd command.
