Redundant smarthosts can be configured via MX records, however if the netapp just looks at an A record, you are relying on one host (that A record) to always be up.
autosupport.mailhost can be a list of up to 5 hosts. I have used that in the past, and it works.
Each hostname can have more than one IP address (e.g. by multiple A records if the info is coming from the DNS). I use that currently: ppsw.cam.ac.uk is our main mail gateway and has half a dozen IP addresses which are in fact independent boxes. I admit that I can't confirm that ONTAP tries all of the addresses in this case, but I think it would be a bug if it didn't.
