Oracle 8.1 vs. netapp

Anybody seen any performance changes with going to oracle 8.1.7 (from 8.0.5) with the databases on netapp storage? (host is sun enterprise 5000, solaris 2.6). Many batch jobs ran dramatically slower on a DB that was upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1. Fingers are getting pointed to the netapp, partly 'cause nobody wants to contemplate down-revving the database. The fact that the jobs ran fine on the netapp before the upgrade would seem to exonerate it but it's a convenient target... A few efforts at tuning the DB seemed to reclaim much of the loss; I'm no oracle expert but it sounds to me like the DB is far from optimal, for example it's set to a 2k block size which seems questionable to me. Diskshelf/FC failure modes

Hi All, I'd like to get some feedback on what issues people have seen in the field with diskshelves and/or FC loop that have caused either decreased performance, an outage or cluster failover. In particular I'd like to know if any particular shelves seem more error prone to either failures or operator error e.g. disks not seated properly, misconfiguration etc and also how people have found the DS14 shelves in the field. I've both SCSI ( F230, F520) and FC filers (F720, F740, F740c, C760, F840 and F840c) with FC8, FC9 and DS14 shelves. NetIO DMA Re-ACLing

unable to create files longer than 16 chars?

I've got the spooky problem here, NetApp support is working on it now but I thought I'd ask here too. This morning a unix only qtree filled up, we added space and deleted some cruft from it. So now, it's got _plenty_ of room. However, it won't let anything create a file with a name longer than 16 chars: IE: # touch /nfs/mail/kgc.really.long.filename.weirdness touch: /nfs/mail/kgc.really.long.filename.weirdness: No space left on device # touch /nfs/mail/kgc.fubar It's isolated to the single qtree on a 740 cluster running 5.3.7. This is got us spooked. Anyone ever seen this before? (I hear rumors that sometimes this happens in a CIFS environment, but we are 100% NFS.) RE: 740 SCSI tape controller slot assignment?

Well, if you take a look at /etc/sysconfigtab, you'll be able to see all the "right" configurations. One of the lines read: allow F740 X201X 1 6,2 2 which actually means that it's slots 6 and 2. (This is from a 6.1.1 system also). There are two options: The manual is right and this file has a typo (happened before) which means you can just correct it in this file and that's it (if the tape is working OK, then this should be the fix). The other option is that the manual is wrong and the file right, which means you have to move the adapter to either slot 2 or 6. I would consult NetApp before doing any of these... But checking the 6.1.1 configuration guide, "SCSI for tape" shows slot 6 as the first choice ("X1") and slot 1 as the second choice ("X2") and doesn't list slot 2 as a valid choice at all. What am I missing?

re-registering filer in wins

data ontap 6.1x, nfs and cifs on f760s we may need to rebuild our wins databases. we can re-register our nt servers after clearing wins by doing nbtstat -RR from the server. how do you re-register a filer? restarting cifs will do it. i tried C:\WINNT>nbtstat -a file1 -RR and got back "Done Release and Refresh of Registered names" but i don't know if it really did anything. has anyone done this before, i didn't see anything in now other than restarting cifs. ---- regards

Root Volume Free Space Requirement for DataONTAP Upgrade

Hi all, Is there any documentation or guideline out there for free space requirement on DataONTAP upgrade. Root volume is currently about 12G total with 1.5G free space. Roughly 90% full. Will be looking to upgrade from 5.3.5R2 to 6.1.2R3. Unfortunately increasing the disk capacity is not an option right now. Am I out of luck? Any advice would be appreciated. Regard, Nic

odd netstat indications

i have filers with ATM interfaces and two ELANS per ATM NIC configured. each of these ELANS is on its own IP network and all the ifconfig info such as netmask and broadcast look fine. each of these interfaces are separatley registered with my naming services and one of them is used for backup only. however, when doing a netstat and looking at the port connections, it appears that some of the traffic from my other networks is going to both interfaces. i am running routed on all filers and have proper default routes set up. the netstat -rn info looks correct as to which interface is getting routed to. i am confused as to why some of these connections in the netstat output appear to be going to my backup network interfaces. does anyone know of any issues with either routed or ATM LANE on the filers that could be causing this? thanks, roger

I just ran the 'ifconfig yadda yadda yadda' at the console from /etc/rc and it reregistered with WINS on one of our dev 880 filers. It hung my telnet session for a second, so I'm assuming it dropped and re-brought up the link...
