I have 2 volumes in the same raid group, though the docs say you can't...

I have 7 disks in vol0 in raid group 0 and 2 disks in vol1 in raid group 0. In the manual it seems to say you can't do this. Will this cause any problems? thanks art

Sam -- thanks, everything has numbers assigned. I must of screwed up when I created the volume. Any way to make one of the 6 data disks a spare? Brian, I have seen 6.5MBytes between an F760 and an F820. Are you using UDP or TCP? And (ignorant question) is Fast ethernet Gigabit or 100Mbit? Upgrade issues with 6.1.2r3

Earlier I had posted a problem regarding the upgrade from 6.0.1r3 to 6.1.2r3. With the help of netapp support we were able to resolve the problem and in the process found out that there is a bug (Bug ID 50610 and 40696) in 6.1.2r3 that for complete Windows 2000 functionality your NetBIOS name should be the 15 leftmost character of the DNS name. in our case our NetBIOS name is MFI and DNS name is mesirowfinancial.net. The bug states that this will work but the filer will behave as a windows NT4 server instead of a Windows 2000 server. Well this defeats the purpose of upgrading the ONTap version so to test it we setup a domain with NetBIOS name as Mesirow and DNS name as Mesirow.net. Now this meets the requirement for upgrade but during cifs setup when we put the domain name as Mesirow.net, we get the following error: "DNS does not appear to be configured correctly for proper windows 2000 operation in this domain. The filer could not resolve simple domain name 'MESIROW' to DNS form 'MESIROW.NET" This is the same error we were receiving before with NetBIOS name of MFI and DNS name of mesirowfinancial.net. "DNS does not appear to be configured correctly for proper windows 2000 operation in this domain. The filer could not resolve simple domain name 'MESIROWFINANCIA' to DNS form 'MESIROWFINANCIAL.NET" We have checked our configuration for DNS and WINS and do not find anything wrong in it. Any help on this issue would be highly appreciated. Network Appliance technical support is working with me on this and are very helpful. Mustafa

I was just reading about how a disk can drop out and the spare gets used but its not marked as failed. Art, Issue the following at the command prompt: fcadmin device_map If you see an entry with xxx instead of a number, that is the missing drive. You should also review the message files - you will probably see a line about a missing disk, finding a spare and reconstructing. The "missing" disk is spun down, but not marked as failed. If you pull out the drive you find that the netapp thinks is missing, and put in a new spare, you will first see a "failed" message. ndmpcopy performance on F740

What sort of throughput are people seeing between two F740s on Fast Ethernet using ndmpcopy? I'm getting at best 4 megabytes per second on the destination filer, with the CPU (from a "sysstat 1") hovering above 95%. The source filer is still humming along at about 20% CPU (though difficult to tell, since there was other activity on the source filer at the time). Doesn't seem that writes via NDMP are very efficient on an F740 (6.1.2R1 on both ends). I'm starting to think that putting a cheap FreeBSD Intel box between the two filers doing copies over NFS will be faster (in fact, I'm pretty sure it will be). Netapp migrating

Hello Toasters We are going to migrate a filer from a NT40 domain to a W2K AD native mode domain, and there is a trust between these 2 domain, and all the users are located on the W2K domain. On the filer we have lots of local groups, files and users working and we don't to want generate new acl's. We have been looking on the microsoft utility ADMT, is there anyone with experience using this utility, to migrate locale groups and machine account? Hilsen / Best Regards Asbjørn Bjørkelund

MessageSpares not only cross shelves they even cross FCAL adapters if you have shelves on different FCAL HBAs. A single volume would have to lose two disks simultaneously or two disks after the first rebult in order to lose data with only one spare. If it lost one disk, then shortly thereafter another disk, then having a second spare would not help as the first one would still be rebuilding and you'd lose the volume. If you lose one disk, rebuild, and lose another disk, you're still intact but in degraded mode and vulnerable. Having a second spare would be helpful. But the odds of losing two disks, the second one after the first one rebuilt but before NetApp got you a replacement 4 hrs or the next day, seems low. If you have two spares per filer like Sam mentioned, you're covered anyway since hot spares are global to the entire filer.
