Yes, However, you will need a VMWare extension to Windows XP. To be honest, if you have a spare outdated computer standing around then it is easy to install linux and then to run the simulator on it. You do not need much linux knowledge to get it to work, even if you have never installed linux it should only take a few hours to learn how to install a mininal system that is sufficient for the simulator. This week I installed SuSE 8.0 Profession with minimal system on a Pentium 90 with 48 MB RAM and a 800MB IDE harddisk to be able to run the simulator. This machine is a bit low on memory, but I decided to try it before adding a bit more RAM. But the simulator runs, although with a lot of disk activity due to paging. It might be old and slow, but it is sufficient for me if I want to check something and I believe that it will work good enough if I find some RAM in my junkbox. I also installed a minimal linux on an old AMD K6-2 333Mhz with 128MB and 6 GB Harddisk. This system runs the simulator perfectly without any complaints. The interesting part is that I also installed a minimal linux on a machine with an AMD Duron 1300, 256MB and a fast 40GB harddisk but the performance jump from the AMD K6-2 isn't that noticable. Actually this machine was the most difficult to install due to a problem with the mainboard under linux. If you would like to give it a try then I suggest you join the simulator mailing list where I can help you to get linux to work, but please note: I don't know much about linux, my specialisation is Windows 2000. Dave: An even better way for users to play with ONTAP is, of course, to use a "real McCoy" version of ONTAP running on an old NetApp filer head and FC shelf. If solely for the purpose of "experimentation" in the support of a production system, would NetApp be hung up on licensing issues? Thanks. Does this work on different OS's other than Linux? Can the Simulater be installed on XP? What is the largest disks you can put in an FC9 shelf? I'd like to make the jump to 144gb drives from 36gb if possible. We've started with Avocent CPS1601 (http://www.avocent.com/web/en.nsf/Content/CPS1610) and had no problems. All of our KVM is Avocent in our new building and it works very well with (and without) their authentication software. Need Serial Console Concentrator

Well we were moving our new Sun 280R's into racks yestarday and one of my Unix team guys went to plug in an *old* P120 Intel box to use as a console device when the P/S went south hard. The spike tripped the main breaker on an OLD OLD OLD PDU which the PC was plugged into. I'm still wondering why the TWO smaller breakers (one on the Sun rack the PC was using power from, and one on the PDU supplying the 30 Amp to the Sun rack) in between didn't trip first. Know what else was on that PDU? The IBM Mainframe. After a 45 min IPL we lost half a days work.... No the NetApp was on two separate house circuits and stayed up. :-) I've been trying to get them to buy me a Console concentrator but I get those blank stares... What is that and what does it do? Why can't you use Telnet? Well I shall make a good case for a concentrator today... Can you all send me your vendor of choice for Concentrators again? I know it came up here just a little while ago. I need to collect vendors and hit them up for this while the issue is hot. Thanks Bob Borowicz
