Distribute aggregate across shelves or limit to one shelf?

Best practice (based on my reading of the archives) seems to be to distribute disk membership in an aggregate across disk shelves. This would appear to be for performance reasons primarily (less chance of saturating a shelf's "uplink" to the controller), but how does it affect reliability? If I limit myself to one aggregate per shelf, if I lose that shelf I lose only the one aggregate. If aggregates are distributed I could lose all of them. My thought is that the chance of the shelf failing is actually pretty slim as its hardware isn't all that sophisticated. And obviously there are performance penalties for limiting to one aggregate per shelf (disk count maximums). Thanks, Ray

Has anyone seen an issue where the filer did not update the SNMP settings when set via FilerView? Like changing/modifying the community strings or trap destinations? We're seeing this on two different 7.3.3 boxes, one of which is in production. Please be advised that this email may contain confidential information. Is anyone running ONTAP 8.x with 64 bit aggrs ?

Hello Toasters, Currently all of our filers are running ONTAP 7.3.x and we are looking at upgrading to 8.x and perhaps buying some disks/shelves that require 8.x. We would also like to convert to 64 bit aggrs to get beyond the 16T size limit. As I understand it, there is no way to upgrade an existing 32 bit aggr to 64 bit in place, you need to copy the data. Furthermore, you cannot volume snapmirror 32 bit to/from 64 bit. I presume you can ndmpcopy 32 bit to/from 64 bit. How about "vol copy" ? Is anyone running 8.x and migrating from 32bit to 64bit aggrs? How are you doing it? Is the recommended 8.x release stable? Any serious bugs, issues, or gotchas ? DFM 4.01 fragmentation on windows 2003 server

I have a vm running windows 2003 with DFM on it monitoring a few filers. Its been running for years, and I have gone from DFM 3.3 on up to 4.x. The question is this. The drive that has the application installed on it is heavily fragmented. All the fragmentation is in the perf data type files. Any thoughts? LUN has run out of space

Hi all, I've a strange issue on a filer deeply used in FC SAN (3160 with DoT 7.3.2P6 -> it will be upgraded but for now is impossible). On a W2K8 server running Exchange 2010 a mailbox store is hosted on a LUN with this characteristics. The LUN has been created with Snapdrive. Volume /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/ 155GB 100GB 54GB 65% /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/ /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/.snapshot 0KB 2110MB 0KB ---% /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/.snapshot Vol options are Nosnap on Snap reserve/sched 0 Volume reservation "volume" Fractional reserve 0 Autosize on Volume autosize is currently ON for volume 'excmbs2FAB01Data'. The volume is set to grow to a maximum of 240 GB, in increments of 10 GB. Snap autodelete on Asis is on with a 20% space saved And the LUN /vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/excmbs2FAB01Data 150.0g (161067432960) (r/w, online, mapped) Comment: " " Serial#: W-PqRo/BiR8t Share: none Space Reservation: disabled Multiprotocol Type: windows_2008 Maps: viaRPC.21:00:00:24:ff:04:15:94.SRSEDEEXCMBS2=2 viaRPC.21:00:00:24:ff:04:15:91.SRSEDEEXCMBS2=2 The only snap in the volume comes from a Snapmirror relationship and it takes roughly 2 GB Volume excmbs2FAB01Data working... %/used %/total date name ---------- ---------- ------------ -------- 2% ( 2%) 1% ( 1%) Mar 23 15:03 netapp2040fab1(0135099451)_excmbs2FAB01Data.2 (snapmirror) As you can see the LUN is written by host for only 100 GB but sometimes it happens that the autogrow starts and on the console this messages are logged: Thu Mar 24 16:01:39 CET [netappfa1: wafl.vol.autoSize.done:info]: Automatic increase size of volume 'excmbs2FAB06Data' by 10485760 kbytes done. Thu Mar 24 16:04:56 CET [netappfa1: scsitarget.lun.noSpace:error]: LUN '/vol/excmbs2FAB01Data/excmbs2FAB01Data' has run out of space. Looking for details on NOW I've found no docs on this issue (just one regarding rws issues) and sincerely I cannot understand the reasons of this "out of space" messages. What if SnapMirrror Cannot Keep Up

So if a source/destination pair is doing a snapmirror update and the current update is not complete before a new update is requested, what is the behavior? Does it queue the second snapmirror update and just update it when the first completes? I understand the behavior when updates are done by the scheduler on the array itself as per snapmirror.conf. In this case it queues the updates but only to a maximum of three. "If an update is in progress when another is scheduled to occur, SnapMirror starts another transfer as soon as the transfer is complete. However, if three updates pass while the current transfer is in progress, SnapMirror does only one more update; it does not go back and run updates that have been made obsolete by those scheduled later." But I'm not talking updates initiated by the scheduler on the array itself. I'm really asking about something like SME performing a backup and requesting an update. The snapmirror update here is functionally equivalent to issuing a snapmirror update command manually. Suppose the mirror does not complete before the next backup and subsequent update request is made (or snapmirror update command issued manually). What if the rate of data change exceeds the ability of network to complete the mirror or if the WAN link to the DR site is just too darn slow? Do the updates queue on the destination and snapshots build up on the source indefinitely? Or do manual or snapmanager initiated updates follow the "queue to three and then give up" rule above?
