CIFS share hiding qtrees within it

Yesterday afternoon around 2p local time, a CIFS share of a FlexVol containing multiple qtree spontaneously began hiding the qtrees within the share (filer is running 8.0.2P3 7-Mode): At the root of the share, non-qtree directories are still visible; qtrees are no longer visible. However, if a user enters the path to the qtree manually, they can access a hidden qtree and files beneath it. By "spontaneously," I mean that /etc/log/auditlog and our homegrown API-based tool confirm that there were no filer configuration changes made. The FlexVol and qtrees are all ntfs mode. The "hidden qtree" behavior has been seen on SMB connections from Windows 7, w2k3 and OS X (at least 10.8, probably other versions). We also share this FlexVol to NFS clients, although usage is light. NFS clients can see and access all qtrees as usual. There were a couple of initial reports from OS X users that they could not connect to the share at all, although I could not confirm or replicate this myself. Share permissions are basic: Name Mount Point Description ---- ----------- ----------- General /vol/general General public share everyone / Change BUILTIN\Administrators / Full Control DAYJOB\Domain Admins / Full Control If we use "Previous versions" on Windows to access the 12p snapshot yesterday, the qtrees are all visible. Using "cacls" or the "Security" tab to view permissions on both hidden and visible directories shows nothing unexpected - and no changes in permissions relative to the 12p snapshot. A "cifs terminate"/"cifs restart" requested by NetApp support did not resolve the issue; they continue to work on it, but assert that they have never seen anything like it before. File size and age distribution stats per volume on Ontap8.1?

Dear List, I am trying to get file size and age distribution stats per volume on a Ontap8.1 system. Apparently, "filestats" command was removed on Ontap8.1 as "filestats" relies on java and java was removed on 8.1. Does anybody know of any quick ways to get this kind of stats on 8.1? Flexcache on 7.2.6.1

I have an old 2050 running 7.2.6.1 which has been decommissioned in favor of new equipment running 8.0.2P4 I would like to redeploy the 2050 at a remote office as a flexcache volume of the new filer to improve the quality of life for the folks working remotely. I don't see any reason why this would be a bad idea, but is there anything I should be aware of when putting a flexcache volume on a filer running 7.2.6.1 (I am going to put the latest 7 code release on it before it gets deployed) in front of a filer running 8.0.2p4?

CIFS clients unable to access folders/ACL's until attached session is closed

Got a strange one here... Have a folder (NTFS qtree w/ oplocks on) shared out via CIFS (also NFS, but expected to be minimal NFS access but still a variable). This folder contains files used for internal software builds/compiles and so several clients can be accessing it at the same time. CIFS clients in this case are typically Mac OSX. Ocassionally (lately, a couple of times a day), CIFS clients are unable to access portions of the tree. Even from Windows we get a permission denied error and can't even view ACL's on the affected folder. To solve the problem, we look for a CIFS client holding the location open and close it out. Then the folder becomes usable again. The CIFS client only has the folder open in "Read" mode. A couple thoughts from my side: - Maybe we should disable oplocks. Shouldn't be a lot (if any) NFS access to this share, but is a variable. - Our permissions are a bit wonky here. Share level permissions are in place to restrict most access to read-only, but file level permissions are set to full for "Everyone". Perhaps this is resulting in some sort of exclusive locking happening based on the more open nature of the file system permissions even if the share level allows read only? We'll probably try the oplocks thing for starters, but looking for any insights. Oh -- this is ONTAP 8.0.2P3 in 7-mode. Thanks, Ray

Sounds like what they are seeing. The mount is obviously gone as writes are going to local disk, but the OS seems to insist the mount is still there. That's as I understand it, anyway. On cluster mode

Hi people, I am contemplating going to cluster mode on our 3170A and was wondering what peoples experience has been? Any problems or gotchas? We are on 8.1.2. Regards, pdg

So NetApp just announced this: http://www.netapp.com/us/company/news/news-rel-20121128-693554.html I am not familiar with Amazon's offerings, but it sounds like you can stick a filer in certain datacenters have your clients continue to access a primary filer via nfs or cifs and then snapmirror that filer to a secondary filer that magically writes it to the cloud? The details are a bit light from what I have been abe to find online, so I am curious if anyone has any additional information. Thanks
