I agree, I think this is a really good idea for an enhancement request. Splitting large volumes

I had a 550 GB volume on my 740 Filer and need to split into two during my plan to migrate the stuff on a new 760 Filer. Hi Jain, Take a look at "Migrating Data Between NetApp Filers" http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3018.html It doesn't cover all the possibilities, (such as connecting the source drives to the destination filer, which has a number of issues you need to be comfortable with), but it will give you a good overview of most of the options available to you. Also some, such as volcopy & SnapMirror, wont apply in this case where you're splitting the volume. Its my understanding that the filer will not (by default) allow you to consume all disks in a system and leave no spares. Problems with NetBackup schedules

Fellow toasters: We're trying to use Veritas NetBackup 3.2GA (patched to the ...443 patch for Solaris) to backup a couple of f760s. The NDMP module is installed and patched. There's a tape library shared between the two filers, each with 2 AIT-2 drives. The connection between the filers and the library is SCSI-diff, from the main board SCSI connection. NDMPd is running on the filer and we can exercise the robotics with no problems from the NetBackup server (a SPARC Ultra 10 running Solaris 2.7). Everything seems to be configured properly, as far as we can tell. The class we created seems to run "manual backups" without too much problem. But the scheduled backups for large filer volume typically do not complete successfully. Such backups get underway and write some number of gigabytes to tape (like 45GB or more or the 450GB volume) and then the backup ends prematurely with a status 196 (suggesting the backup was trying to run outside its backup window). We tried adding the /etc/system changes suggested in the release notes for Solaris, but this did not seem to help much. Also, does anybody fully understand the interaction between "duration" and the schedules' start times? There are more than a few ways to do this..but all at the root involve backuping your data, destroying the large volume, and rebuilding <x> smaller volumes. Then restoring that data selectively into whatever volumes you want what data..and rebuilding your /etc/exports and on your clients the shares/mount points so it all still looks like it did before.
