NetApp API authentication

Having started to review some of our filer automation scripts, I'm starting to look in a bit more detail at the API. My first conclusion is - the perl SDK doesn't actually seem to do anything much - it seems to be a reimplementation of LWP and and XML Parser. Given I have LWP and XML::Twig installed, and am making API calls just fine, is there anything I'm missing here? Aside from that though - authentication types. I currently use ssh public-private key pairs, in a trusted account on a management station to enable 'doing stuff' with filers. It _looks_ like my only option with the API is to create a designated service account, and assign permissions... and then embed a username and password in a script somewhere. That just doesn't sit well with me - I like what ssh-agent will do in 'unlocking' key files, and I don't like embedding (potentially privileged) usernames and passwords ... anywhere. Does anyone have a better solution than a couple of designated API users (privileged and read only) with a file somewhere embedding their username and password? Does anyone have a better approach?

Deswizzle

Hi I have a storage system that is under stress, and as luck has it I need to added more stress by loading it with a large cifs related volume, this is a transition from a 7-Mode ontap system Every time we complete the transition, the system spikes disks 100%, cpu 100%, etc. On the perfstat we see deswizzling running. This is a normal operation every time a snapmirror break-off occurs, that is the deswizzle part of the equation.. When we take this volume offline, operations go back to normal. My question, what is the result of disabling deswizzle is the short term, do I look functionality, e.g. vol move? To turn off deswizzle: Nodeshell*> options wafl.deswizzle.enable off To turn on deswizzle: Nodeshell*> options wafl.deswizzle.enable on Backround: FAS3210, C-Dot 8.2.3, SAS disks

API calls to replicate a 'df'

I'm currently fiddling with a project using the ONTAPI (perf stats monitoring sort of thing). What I'm wanting to do is reproduce the information from 'df' and 'df -s'. Doing well so far, because the api 'volume-list-info' seems to have most of the information I want. There's just one thing missing - how much of the 'snap reserve' I'm actually using. I can't seem to find it in either that, or the 'snapshot' counters. I would ideally be able to do this without having to do a per-volume calculation, because one of the things I'm hoping to do is support a lightweight proxy client that 'just' fetches source XML for processing on a server. Or is there a way I can calculate this from the size/used/available in the volume-list-info? Thanks, Ed

FAS2xxx Upgrade - Flash Cache Performance Estimation?

Greetings We're looking to upgrade two sites which consist of a FAS2020 (7.3.7) and FAS2240-2 (8.1.4-7m) at each site. The 2240-2 systems have a FlashPool accelerated aggregate and the customer is happy with the performance. The new filers will be either a FAS2552 with additional shelves or we may ditch the entry toasters and go with a FAS8020 system and shelves at each site. If we go with the 2552 we'll keep using FlashPool. If we go with the 8020 we have the option of going FlashCache. We'd like to evaluate the potential performance improvements of using FlashCache on the 8020 in order to help with the purchasing decision. However, reading TR-3801 it looks like the FAS2000 and 2200 platforms don't support Predictive Cache Statistics (PCS). This is confirmed by trying to enable PCS: toaster> options flexscale.enable on FlexScale PCS is not active and cannot be enabled. Are there any other tools which can help us estimate the performance benefits of FlashCache? Or perhaps some key metrics we can collect and analyse? NFS client info

Hello list, I’m trying to understand if it’s possible to get info similar to the 7-mode command nfsstat -l I apparently need to collect statistics with the statistics start -object nfs* -vserver svm But would like to be able to pinpoint the top 10 NFS hosts, could someone let me know how if they’ve worked it out, or commiserate if not :( ~Mark

cluster mode 8.2.3 / 8.3 dynamic home directory change

Hi Toasters, I just stumbled upon a change in 8.2.3/8.3 with respect to the dynamic home shares and curious to get other folks views on it. Currently we make extensive use of the traditional static 7mode home directory share, cifs.homedir (\\filername\cifs.homedir<file:///\\filername\cifs.homedir>). This is further referenced behind DFS as a single link name with multiple targets. It works great, allows for all users to have a static username defined in AD, allows migration of filers without massive user updates, DR, etc. So life is good, or as good as it can be managing windows home directories. We're now slowly staring to lifecycle 7mode clusters to cmode, which has had a few hiccups, but I expected that . Prior to 8.2.3, you can replicate 7mode home directory functionality perfectly, even making up whatever static name you want. Fast forward to just recently when I was configuring a small cluster at a remote location. 8.2.3, sure slap that on. Configure the dynamic home directories, sure,errr.... no. A seemingly innocent entry in the release notes for 8.2.3 states that static names are no longer acceptable. A previously configured static share is brought forward and continues to function but you can no longer create new ones. Any new dynamic home share has to have the username in it (%w or %u). Needless to say this is a major change to our environment. Automation changes, massive AD updates (close to a nightmare with our IT organization) and a complete invalidation of our DFS namespace structure for home directories. Is anyone else similarly affected by this? I'm struggling to understand what twisted logic guided this coding decision. check Global Status of a CDOT cluster using SNMP?

Hello All, We're rolling out a pair of CDOT clusters and setting up Nagios monitoring. On our pre-CDOT clusters we check the global health of the filers using SNMP and the miscGlobalStatusMessage OID. It returns along the lines of: NETAPP-MIB::miscGlobalStatusMessage.0 = STRING: The system's global status is normal. In 8.3, even though the MIB that NetApp publishes for CDOT includes this OID, an SNMP query returns: NETAPP-MIB::miscGlobalStatusMessage = No Such Object available on this agent at this OID Anybody got any guidance? And if we're out of luck via SNMP, any ideas for an equivalent shell command I can pass via SSH? Hope to hear from you, Randy in Seattle

Hello list, First post here … my role w/NTAP in the last three years has been with the OnCommand Performance Manager (OPM) program. For your first question – OPM 1.0 had many limitations, OPM 1.1 is the GA version and has many improvements in the troubleshooting analysis page. I can help you figure out 1.0 but we’ve fixed many of the confusing issues in it with the 1.1 release. We also have OPM 2.0 in the works coming out within weeks. I suggest you switch to 2.0 once it ships. It’s a much improved product. OPM 2.0 calculates an Aggregate and Node utilization metric, shows it front and center in the dashboard and allows you to set alert thresholds. All metrics in OPM 2.0 are hyperlinked with an explorer interface. As for figuring out what is pushing an aggregate, again there are improvements in 1.1 to help with that and 2.0 is MUCH BETTER (and yes I know I’m speaking loudly). When I look at an event, it says things like "3 victim volumes slow due to 5 bully volumes causing contention on aggr_SAS". When I drill in, I can see a list of volumes with their latency at that period, but no indication whether they're being considered victims or bullies. Has anyone had any experience with this software? Another question- is there a way to look directly at an aggregate's utilization? If I drill into a volume, I can see the aggregate with "break down data by - components - disk operations", but that doesn't show me the aggregate itself. Just the contribution of this volume to the aggregate. When I look into an event, the aggregate utilization is listed, but I can't get to there on its own page with a controllable graph. Lastly, if I know an aggregate is being pushed to 100% but I can't see any volumes pushing harder, is there a way I can check whether system work is responsible? My first thought was that it was dedupe, but that's scheduled to kick off with the lowest possible priority about two hours after this event occurred. Cheers! Basil

cDOT 8.3: disk assignment

Hi, I've been configuring aggregates on 6 nodes cluster today and managed to assign a disk to a node that the disk is not "cabled" to, ie it sits in a disk shelf that is managed by a different HA-pair: na201::> disk show -container-type unknown Usable Disk Container Container Disk Size Shelf Bay Type Type Name Owner ---------------- ---------- ----- --- ------- ----------- --------- -------- 6.45.16 - 45 16 SAS unknown - na201node-3a The disk is "cabled" to na201node-1a, so I'm trying to change the ownership: na201::> storage disk assign -disk 6.45.16 -owner na201node-1a -force Error: command failed: Failed to assign disks. Reason: Disk 6.45.16 does not exist. OK, this time trying to remove the ownership: na201::> storage disk removeowner -disk 6.45.16 -force Warning: Disks may be automatically assigned to the node because the disk's auto-assign option is enabled. If the affected volumes are not offline, the disks may be auto-assigned during the remove owner operation, which will cause unexpected results. To verify that the volumes are offline, abort this command and use "volume show".
