snapdrive failing to map lun

This process was working as of yesterday. Had an issue on the server and had to reboot and now I'm getting this odd error. This is a linux host running RHEL 5.2. It's connecting to a 3270 running 8.0.2P3. This linux server has a script that connects to 2 luns, each on different filers. Both filers give the same error when running the command below: [root@server bin]# snapdrive snap connect -lun data/disk disk_2012-04-17 -snapname filer:/vol/volume/data/disk:daily-2012-04-17 connecting filer:/vol/volume/data/disk: creating unrestricted volume clone filer:/vol/lun_data ... success mapping new lun(s) ... done discovering new lun(s) ... *failed* Cleaning up ... - LUN filer:/vol/lun_data/disk__2012-04-17 ... deleted - deleting volume clone ... filer:/vol/rootdb_data done 0001-476 Admin error: Unable to discover the device associated with filer:/vol/data/disk_2012-04-17. If multipathing in use, there may be a possible multipathing configuration error. Please verify the configuration and then retry. Multipathing was not previously in use on this server. I tried this with and without multipathd running. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Problems with OC5's database

Hi, Ever since upgrading from OpsMan to OC5, I've had nothing but problems with it, or its database to be specific. I recently spent 4 months working with NetApp support on one issue where the NetApp agents were causing OC5 to run out of interprocess communication semaphores thus preventing the web ui from communicating with the database. This was "solved" by removing the name of the OC5 server from all the agents so they wouldn't bother it anymore. This solved the ipcs issue, but now I still have problems with the database when trying to run and DFM-related commands from a cli. The error I always get is: Error: The DataFabric Manager server database is temporarily unavailable; error code is -103 Error: Please try again later This can go on for hours, yet the web ui, while horribly slow, is still responsive and monitoring/alerting continues. I can find nothing on the NOW site related to issues like these and am reluctant to open another support case and be told I am the only one who appears to have this problem. After the last case my OC5 installation has been poked and prodded and examined 6 ways from Sunday, and nothing found to be odd or not covered by netapp's best practices. VSC 4 and online alignment - anyone used it in anger?

Hi all, I've been testing the new functionality in VSC 4 around online re-alignment. I've done some tests with a test datastore and test VM under load, all fine. However I have an estate of over 200 datastores. Has anyone run the scan manager across all their datastores at once? Was there any noticeable impact to the VMs? As far as I can tell, I can only schedule the scan to scan everything at once. I know I could manually do batches but I need to run the scans overnight. I've found documentation around the actual online alignment function and warnings to not do too many at once, but nothing about the scan. There also seems to be no way of stopping the scan once it starts, which makes my rollback plan in my CR for this scan a bit empty looking and hard to justify. And a long shot, just out of curiosity, if anyone has any information on what the scan actually does would be interesting too. I can see it takes a VM snapshot for each VM in the datastore, then deletes it, but that's it. I've searched NOW high and low, but documentation on VSC 4 is pretty thin on the ground. Thanks, Peta

You can start with http://support.netapp.com/NOW/download/swchangelog.shtml The link is on the bottom of the Software Download page, "View Software Change Log". However, that list is not very accurate. I think they manage it by hand... I.e. OnCommand System Manager 2.0.1 is not (yet?) posted in the log. Same goes for patch releases, they are never in the log. But it's a start. Operations Manager and vfilers

I've been trying to delete a vfiler from DFM/Operations Manager. This should be simple and I've tried using the DFM command-line for that purpose: dfm vfiler delete <object> The problem I'm running into is that most of the volumes formerly hosted by that vfiler have been migrated to the hosting filer (aka, vfiler0) but they are deleted in DFM along with the vfiler. These are still valid volumes and need to be monitored, so it's kind of problematic. I've tried "re-discovering" the hosting filer after I deleted the vfiler to get the volumes to move to the "right" place and I've also tried waiting for the next monitoring interval for DFM to pick up the "new" volumes, but nothing is working at this point. The only workaround I've discovered is to re-add the destroyed vfiler to get the volumes back and stop monitoring on the vfiler itself. Any ideas on how to get DFM to "Do The Right Thing"? Recovering a RAID 4 aggregate on FAS2020

Hi all, This is in short our present (sad) toaster situation: we had a FAS2020 system with two controllers, a base shelf of 12 SAS 300Gb disks and an external shelf of 14 1TB SATA disks. We had, among others, an agreggate made of 6 SATA disks configured with RAID4 (5 data disks + 1 parity disk) and 1 spare disk available. One week ago, one of the disks failed. The system substituted it by the spare disk and begun to reconstruct the RAID. However 20 hours later and, before finishing RAID reconstruction, another disk failed. Reconstruction should have ended on that period as the system was not loaded at all (10-12 hours should have lasted as I've read), but unfortunately took longer. When the second disk failed, the first controller made a takeover and set the aggregate offline. nfs: cannot create regular file : Premission denied

Hi, I am a Unix administrator, new to Netapp. We have an IBM N6240 running data ontap 8.0.2p3. I created an nfs share on the netapp with rw and root access by an Ubuntu linux (10.4). Interconnect ports on FAS3240 / N6240 (IBM)

We have a FAS3240 (IBM N6240 actually) and are wanting to trunk in a network and give ourselevs a new vif on subnet 192.168.3.0/24 (as an example). However, we see that the interconnect interfaces (c0a/c0b) have an IP in this same range (192.168.3.x). It seems as those these are internal only, and as such I'm guessing if we add a vif for serving data in the same subnet, there won't be any conflicts? Can anyone confirm? Thanks, Ray

Howdy Toasters, I'm looking for docs on how to setup KRB5 and NFS V4, with a MS AD as KDC. I've looked through TR-3580 as well as some of Eisler's blog entries. Is there a canonical reference for this stuff? Most of the material I've found so far is a bit scattered, and several years old. My test filer is a FAS270 running 7.3.6P5. Compression. What's real and what they trumpet

Hi all, since a lot of time but more over during past events NetApp shouts it from the rooftops that "data compression" in 8.x is a reality! Fake. Yet today a PVR is requested to activate the compression on 8.0.x (the most of "8" installations are on this release) and 8.1 is currently in RC...again, 8.1 has several bugs to be fixed in 8.1.1 (when?) that interest 3100 series (lot of systems running on this platform). Me, and most of my collegues, don't trust in compression. Yes, we can test it, we can do some trick but to upgrade a perfectly running system just to compress some data is another play. The issue is that customers attending those events want to compress data and ask us to set up the systems. What's your opinions about this feature? We've experienced several troubles in a production environment. I still consider that compression is not a mature feature how could be, for instance, deduplication or all the techniques to implement the so named storage efficiency. Regards Dott.
