latency measurement in DFM/Management Console/etc

How does the Netapp or DFM measure volume and lun latency? Does it just measure how long it's taking to service requests from the back ports to the front ports? Or does it measure some sort of fibre ping to the host? I am looking in the management console in DFM/Ops Mgr and seeing spikes of very high volume and lun latency (seconds...) on an N-Series IBM gateway filer. I've looked at all the usual suspects, including misaligned VMs, high correlated IOPs, delays on the backend disk, deferred consistency points. Nothing is matching up. Most of the connected systems are on a Cisco UCS with NPIV. The systems with the lowest IOs have the highest latency numbers. Thoughts? TIA, Fred

write cache setting for Windows

This seems like a newbie question, but I'm confused and found limited info on this. Should I be using the "Enable Write Caching" setting on my Windows disks that are Netapp lun (FC) based? Does this tell Netapp to use write caching for that lun/port, or does it tell Windows to cache somewhere on the local system? TIA, Fred

Hi all, for disk shelves DS4243 the configuration guide reports only a rule for disks "same type" in the same shelf, and not "same size". Is it possible to have, i.e., 12 1 TB SATA disks and 12 2 TB SATA disks on the same DS4243? Or, i.e, 300 and 600 SAS? In this way I could have, using software ownership in cluster, controllers with different amount of spaces... Regards

As from my mail I've already run the TS Client in "console" mode (/admin from Windows 7, Vista or XP SP3) and I've already tried the "native" console in vCenter (or vClient...). Not tried VNC but I don't think that customers could be happy to have VNC installed ONLY for this! It's incredible to think that NetApp engineers did not think that this environment is nowadays quite normal!!! And this is a NEW bug because I've always run SME config wizard till version 6 when on W2K3 and Exchange 2K3/2K7...this is new for E2K10 on W2K8 64bit! I'm really disappointed but smiling... That should work. Or, you could just go to vcenter. That's the console to. There is always dameware, or VNC. Hi all, I've run up against this bug: https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=2011025 Running SME 6.0 on a VMware VM with Exchange 2010 I cannot run configuration wizard because no storage group/db are visible in the console. Obviously the only way to access to the VM is using Terminal Services...I've tried of course both the vCenter console and the MSTSC client in /admin mode. No luck. Suggestions?

Moved volume to new filer, administrator ACLs now invalid?

Greetings, We replaced a filer named home2 with a new head. We physically moved disks from the old head to the new head. One of the volumes that we moved uses ntfs security style. I used to be able to map the volume/share as user home2\administrator and had "full contol" on everything. Now, however, the home2\administrator user on the new head has a new SID while the ACLs in the volume display the old SID. So now Administrator has limited access rights (can't drill down into folders, can't change ACLs, etc.) Doesn't the local Administrator user trump the ACLs ? Anyone have any suggestions? I'm a Unix guy with limited Windows knowledge. By the way, the filer is a member of a Windows AD domain, but I'm not a domain admin, so I don't have a privileged AD account.
