NDMPCOPY question

One of our files has a space in the qtree name and I'm struggling to execute an NDMPCOPY command on it. I have tried put double quotes & single quotes around the qtree name and the full path and a backslash in front of the space, but no difference, see below for an example; ndmpcopy -sa root:oldsys mis-netapp1:"/vol/vol1/education practice" "/vol/vol1/education practice" Ndmpcopy: Starting copy [ 17 ] ... Some questioning about FlexClone

Hi, we're currently considering the purchase of a FlexClone license for some of our database environment (MySQL 5, DOT 7.3.2, ~2TB data, growing fast), but I've been wondering if it provides the functionality we need. AFAICT, what we'll get with FlexClone is a read-write snapshot -- which is fine --, but the real question is about service migration between two copies : let's suppose we have a dev and a production database ; how would we migrate the service (e.g. a MySQL server) between the two? I realise hot migration will be complicated to implement, but do some of you already have played with this kind of things before? routing issue with 2 vifs on same subnet?

We recently upgraded our SAN ethernet switches and moved from a config where we had one vif with all the nic ports on one switch to a config where we've split the nic ports out across the switches. So we now have two vifs split across the switches. Both vifs are on the same subnet and they have separate ip addresses as our switches don't support cross-switch etherchannelling. We currently have everything going through vif1 and this is working just fine. The issue is starting when I start trying to access the second vif, vif2. I can ping vif2 fine, ssh into vif2 fine but when I try to nfs mount an export on vif2 it hangs, waiting, waiting... then mounts it after about 30 seconds (on linux, solaris hosts don't seem to every mount it). But this only happens from some hosts. Other hosts can mount their exports on vif2 just fine. I took a tcpdump of the process and what appears is happening is vif1 is responding to requests to vif2, for a while, and then eventually responds out of vif2 and the linux servers is then able to mount the export. I've tried disabling fastpath and this didn't help. I then started thinking that I possibly need to have the vifs on seperate subnets but netapp support has verified that it should work fine on the same subnet. I'm not getting anywhere fast with netapp support so thought I'd see if anyone else has any ideas. Thanks, -- Romeo Theriault

FC port fan-in

Toasters, I am looking at the specs for the Netapp 3140 cluster, and attempting to find the answers to two questions: 1) How many VMWare hosts can I have looking at the same set of LUNs? Before I have real-world performance issues? 2) How many multipathed hosts can I have, total, pointed at a four-fc-port cluster? The limit in #1, according to NOW, is 256 (256 initiators per igroup). What are your experiences in with this in large VMWare farms? #2 seems to be 256 according to NOW, but there is a limit called "FC port fan-in" of 64. This would seem to limit the total number of HBA initiators pointing at a port to 64, which, since all my HBAs see all my ports, would limit the total hosts to ... 64? What does this number mean effectively for hosts with two cards? TIA, Fred

NIC's

If NIC's like the X1037's and X1047's are OEM'd from some company like Intel, can I just go out and buy the Intel version and it will work? I've got some older filers I need to move off of fibre onto copper and was hoping I could just purchase the manufacturer's version and save some money. df -s value

Maybe I am missing something here: FAS6040 DOT 7.3.1.1 FC 500GB LUN 0 fractional reserve thin provisioned running dedupe (love it) I think there is a bug maybe in my version of DOT. I ran df-s on a volume, and this is what I am seeing. /vol/netapp_vol_vmware_DMZ_01/ 79484444 74719212 48% Should it be around 94% ? Odd message on one VIF

I ran into an odd problem this week where CIFS would not let me delete a share and would not terminate. sdf and GX/OT8CM

Anyone who is running GX or 8CM, what are you doing to handle the sdf v. df issue of nested mounts? For those who don't know sdf is 'spinnaker' df and is used to find out df info on a nested volume in the GX namespace. I assume it's similar in 8CM as well but have not yet seen it. In any case, my first thought was simply a wrapper to determine if the mount was on a gx system and then either call sdf if so or pass off to the OS df if not. But if there's a more elegant solution I'd like to know. Thanks. What exactly does SnapDrive buy me?

It looks like we're getting funding for our DR project. The bare bones are using snapmirror to replicate an Oracle DB offsite alone with a few dozen front end/infrastructure VMs. Two of the items we've been quoted by our vendor are SnapDrive & SnapRestore. I can understand snaprestore but why would I need snapdrive at the DR site? I don't even use it at our primary site, the Oracle system is very static, we do not have the hardware capacity to run a cloned instance and I'm comfortable with scripting a snapshot. I tried reading NetApp's SnapDrive document <http://media.netapp.com/documents/snapdrive.pdf> and it looks like it will do every buzzword under the sun but I have no idea what it really gets me other than the ability to see/control snapshots from the server - which I don't want. In addition it breaks the KISS idea which is important, especially since this system will be in another geographical location and not have as many eyes on it as a live system would. The only difference you will notice is that aggregates created on 3rd party disks will not have any RAID turned on from the filer side as we will rely on the back-end array to handle disk failures. In theory, the V-Series should never see a drive go away. The LUNs provisioned to the V-Series look like disks to the controller. Starting in 7.3, you can also hook up NetApp shelves at the same time. But all of the software features work just like a FAS.
