CIFS virus scan

Hi guys, We have been using the Symantec scan engine for NetApp for several years now, but we've met more and more problems as of late. As the next license upgrade will be due in a couple of months, that might be a good opportunity to replace it by a different brand altogether. Hence my question to the list: Which antivirus product do you use and how satisfied are you with it? multistore/vfiler and aggregate performance

hi, i have a customer who will be using multistore/vfilers of random workloads all over nfs. my view for an overall performance perspective is two controllers and multiple raid groups per aggregate evenly spread. ie, if i had 5 FCAL shelves i could create 2 aggregates comprised of 2 16 disk raid groups spread across both controllers and all shelves however their budget can at max allow 4 shelves which would leave one aggregate with 2 raid groups, the other with one and more spares since i would not want to add a half sized raidgroup. the idea being that the vfilers would be split evenly across aggregates to better spread ops load across the drives but realistically will that gain better performance versus a single aggregate with 3 raidgroups spread across both controllers and all drives?

We got two Win2003 servers as AV servers for each NetApp cluster we have. The trouble is not with the filers, but with Symantec. Not too rarely, an unsuccessfull virus update has left a scan engine in a dysfunctional state. As it can still be reached from the filer, it still gets its share of scan requests, which it promptly anwers with a 0x05 error. Moreover we've had some installation problems lately with newer versions of the Symantec scanners (We use standard HP servers, so actually there should be no problem at all). Besides, Symantec's support has grown so bad during the last two or three years, they are absolutely no help at all. Because our license period is about to end, we were thinking about replacing the Symantec scanners by a different brand, that's why I wanted to hear about the experience others have made with the alternatives there are. Exchange iscsi luns and Snapmanager/SMBR without snapdrive

asking the community while i wait on the official netapp answer. are either Snapmanager for Exchange or the Single Mailbox Restore products absolutely tied to or unable to function completely if snapdrive is not present? in short, this "easy to use" gui tool has wasted enough of our time already and I do not need anything other than the ontap command line and about 15 minutes to provision the proper igroups and luns requested by our Exchange admins and another minute to bring them up via the microsoft iscsi interface format them and put them under the microsoft cluster services control. one last tidbit, although assured this would work fine, any luns that were created from the filer were completely unable to be seen, utilized, or managed via snapdrive. they had to be deleted and provisioned through the snapdrive interface which is not familiar to us and not behaving as shown to us by netapp. even support seemed to be perplexed although it was indicated that perhaps this was due to the servers being 2008 Server and the snapdrive version 6. anyhow im only just clarifying if there is any fundamental dependency between snapdrive and the exchange snapshot tools. :) -- Daniel Leeds Manager, Storage Operations Edmunds, Inc. 1620 26th Street, Suite 400 South Santa Monica, CA 90404 310-309-4999 desk 310-430-0536 cell

ESH's laying around anyone ?

I have 3 DS14 shelves with LRC's and 72 gig drives in them. I'd like to move them to a FAS920 where I need space and add them to a loop of ESH/ESH2 based shelves. By any chance does anybody have 2 (or even 4) ESH's they are not using ? Would you trade my LRC's (if you need complete HW to surplus) for them ??? I'm in the Austin, Texas area but would pay shipping if need be. Thanks! -Bob

I believe SnapManager makes use of calls from SnapDrive. Backup Operators group on filer

Hi toasters, we are currently testing expand boxes to boost our cifs access from remote locations to our centralized Netapp filers. Sadly the expand boxes need to have access to the cifs files in order to replicate them to the remote boxes. When accessing files of course the normal user-rights of the user accessing the files are used. What i did is, i put the service-user into the "Backup Operators" group on the filer, but without success. When i try to replicate the cifs-shares i always get error messages that the user is not allowed to open the files. With the "Administrators" group on the filer it worked. But this is not an option in my eyes, as this right is too high and in case a user removes the "Administrators" group from a folder the expand box will fail to replicate this folder as well. Has anybody a good idea or even deployed expand boxes for cifs-acceleration with netapp? Best Practices for Shelf Addition

Greetings, I have a FAS3040 running 7.2.4 that is used primarily for LUNs over FCP. I balance most of the filesystems across four LUNs in two volumes groups spread across both controllers. I would like to add additional space, but was wondering if there were best practices in terms of buying two shelves at a time (like some other vendor's models) or if a single shelf is okay. Since I spread the space across both controllers, is it okay to distribute the disks on a single shelf to both controllers? Will this affect RGs or performance in any way? Snapmanager Oracle for Windows schedule, how to?

Hi all Few days ago I had a chance to install (first time) a Snapmanager for Oracle 2.2 on a Windows 2K3 hosting Oracle 9.2 db instances. No great issues understanting repository and profile concepts or creating backup jobs both full or partial. The issues arrived when, also using the wizard I expected myself to have some items to create a procedure to be scheduled using the Windows scheduler, exactly as done lot of times with SMSQL or SME. I looked for docs or best practice to create some job and to schedule it with no luck. Also reading at command line options it seems quite complex to create and prepare some command rows and to put them in some batch to include in the scheduler. Another strange thing is that once created a backup job with its label you cannot reuse it and it has to be recreated from the beginning. Is there something like that also in SMO? Where is it? Or, alternatively, where I can find docs that can give me some sample to schedule/repeat and so on the job created with SMO? Thanks a lot

Power considerations for FAS3050c

Hi all, I'm setting up a loaner FAS3050c which didn't come with any documentation (working on that issue right now), but am trying to gauge rack space needed and power requirements. Currently I have a FAS3050 controller (3U) and three DS14mk2 shelves loaded with FC disks. Rounding it out with a 1U Broacade Silkworm 3200 VL2. Going off specs on Netapp's site and elsewhere it looks like I can expect the controller to use a max of around 6.4 amps, but it's not clear if this is at 110 or 220. The DS14mk2's have a breakdown depending on the voltage -- 4.4 for 110 and 2.3 for 220. So, a couple questions: - Can the controller use 220? - Is the 6.4A rating for 110 or 220? Any thoughts on a working power configuration would be appreciated. TIA, Ray
