Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? how to "move" an existing snapmirror to new network interfaces?

I have lots of existing q-tree snapmirrrors of the form: srcfiler:/vol/volM/qtreeX destfiler:/vol/volN/qtreeY "srcfiler" (DNS name) is the e11 interface on srcfiler "destfiler" (DNS name) is the e9a interface on destfiler We just built a "dedicated snapmirror/backup" network and added the following: "srcfiler-backup" (DNS name) is the e0 inteface on srcfiler "destfiler-backup" (DNS name) is the e11a interface on destfiler Subsequent 'snapmirror update -S ...' commands (we don't use snapmirror.conf) still use the non "-backup" network links. I'm not seeing the counters on the "-backup" links increment via the `ifstat` command. The $64,000 question: --------------------- How do I "move" these snapmirrors to the "-backup" network links...without, of course, re-initializing them? I'm expecting, in the end, to see `snapmirror status` give back to me: srcfiler-backup:/vol/volM/qtreeX destfiler-backup:/vol/volN/qtreeY and see the counters on e0 on srcfiler and e11a on destfiler increment. Different view of the same file from win & linux

Hi, We are experiencing a strange issue on one of our r200 systems. We have a volume, which is accessed from linux and windows. There is no issue with rights etc, the problem is that there are a few files, that have been created some time ago, have different versions and a different content, just from the OS that you are looking from. I tracked this user issue on my admin host (SuSe 9.3 2.6.11.4-20a-default): (The original host is running on Solaris, both the problem occurs on every host) I mounted the volume twice, via NFS & CIFS. SMB Mount: //nstore2/pdmmig$ on /mnt1 type smbfs (0) NFS Mount: nstore2:/vol/pdmmig on /mnt type nfs (rw,addr=172.18.131.211) This is one of the files that are affected by this strange issue: ls -l /mnt1/mcad_vault/Singapore_Dev_Loc_xml/CAD_NEW_1_CAApData.xml -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2540 Jul 19 2007 /mnt1/mcad_vault/Singapore_Dev_Loc_xml/CAD_NEW_1_CAApData.xml ls -l /mnt/mcad_vault/Singapore_Dev_Loc_xml/CAD_NEW_1_CAApData.xml -rw-rw-rw- 1 6500 6500 4136 Jul 20 2007 /mnt/mcad_vault/Singapore_Dev_Loc_xml/CAD_NEW_1_CAApData.xml A diff on both files, proves the difference that is already indicated by the file size. There is no difference between the two paths, both mounts point to the same path and to the same file, but there is a difference in the content between them. I've already tested a little bit with caching, links etc, but this doesn't seem to point in the right way. Additionally it's not possible for me, to reproduce the problem with new files. Snapmanager for sql duration

I'm doing a snap manager for sql migration, it's been sitting @ 74% complete for about 4 hours now. I'm seeing I/O on the luns as well as traffic on the fiber, but the disks have been @ the same capacity for quite some time and there are no new event logs/report entries. It's only about ~300m of data, but I've got pre & post verify on. Other smaller dbs have already been migrated.... Does this seem excessively long? Quota re-initialization on re-joining AD domain

Hello all... Recently we had made some changes to Windows AD, and the filer was required to terminate 'CIFS' and then re-join AD through 'CIFS SETUP'. One of the volumes that was holding CIFS shares had quotas enabled...After re-joining the domain, I had to re-initialize quotas... I was of the view that no re-initialization would be required...but it was the other way round... Is it normal???or is there some problem in the CIFS setup... ??? Any comments...???? Thanx

Is there a limit to the number of VM's per NFS export?

For the folks using NFS to hold their VMDK files, have you run into a limit to how many VM's a single share can support? Either a hard limit or just a point where performance degrades? I'm trying to figure out how many volumes I'll need to create to hold ~300 VMs on my 3070 cluster. "df -h" shows less snapshots than "snap delta"

I am rather puzzled. cn1:~ # rsh filer df -h vol1 Filesystem total used avail capacity Mounted on /vol/vol1/ 2448GB 776GB 1671GB 32% /vol/vol1/ snap reserve 612GB 158GB 453GB 26% /vol/vol1/.. So according to this we have 156GB worth of snapshots. So far so good. cn1:~ # rsh filer snap delta vol1 Volume vol1 working... ... Summary... From Snapshot To KB changed Time Rate (KB/hour) --------------- -------------------- ----------- ------------ -------------- Oldest_snap Active File System 265800060 14d 09:08 770120.583 Oops. I would expect df -h to show *more* than snap delta (due to the fact that we have more intermediate snapshots); but how comes that - apparently having 260GB worth of snapshot data - I only see 158GB in space accounting? I am likely missing something obvious. Hmm ... is it possible that "snap delta" accounts for both changed *and* new data while "df -h" accounts for *changed* data only? Looks plausible... Patrick, Tough to mandate dave or admitmac in a diverse higher education environment. 100's of macs show up after the Christmas holidays and they all expect to use university resources immediately. Carl, Our understanding from Apple is that the next Leopard update, 10.52, will address the CIFS access issue. Consider this scenario. 1) take snapshot #1 of a volume 2) create a new and very large file 3) take snapshot #2 of volume 4) delete the very large file 5) take snapshot #3 At this point the "delta" between snapshots 1 and 3 and the live volume will be very small. But the "delta" between snapshot 2 and any other snapshot (or the live volume) will be large. This is because snapshot 2 (and only snapshot 2) still contains the large file that was deleted. So you can see that the delta between the live volume and each of its snapshots does not necessarily increase with the age of the snapshot.
