Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? how to "move" an existing snapmirror to new network interfaces?

I have lots of existing q-tree snapmirrrors of the form: srcfiler:/vol/volM/qtreeX destfiler:/vol/volN/qtreeY "srcfiler" (DNS name) is the e11 interface on srcfiler "destfiler" (DNS name) is the e9a interface on destfiler We just built a "dedicated snapmirror/backup" network and added the following: "srcfiler-backup" (DNS name) is the e0 inteface on srcfiler "destfiler-backup" (DNS name) is the e11a interface on destfiler Subsequent 'snapmirror update -S ...' commands (we don't use snapmirror.conf) still use the non "-backup" network links. I'm not seeing the counters on the "-backup" links increment via the `ifstat` command. The $64,000 question: --------------------- How do I "move" these snapmirrors to the "-backup" network links...without, of course, re-initializing them? I'm expecting, in the end, to see `snapmirror status` give back to me: srcfiler-backup:/vol/volM/qtreeX destfiler-backup:/vol/volN/qtreeY and see the counters on e0 on srcfiler and e11a on destfiler increment. Patrick, Tough to mandate dave or admitmac in a diverse higher education environment. 100's of macs show up after the Christmas holidays and they all expect to use university resources immediately. Carl, Our understanding from Apple is that the next Leopard update, 10.52, will address the CIFS access issue. I went back and read this email and found a promising aspect of the nature of this setup. With FC, the odds are extremely high that your issue is in the configuration of your MPIO stack which is an important pre-requisite step for a stable SnapDrive deployment. You can actually verify these steps in the SnapDrive installation guide. But either way, the support center is very capable of isolating this and is your best source for detailed, conclusive analysis. You really need SnapDrive or a piece of software like the "sync" driver in VMware which will ensure that your system will boot up afterwards. Not sure if there are any alternatives on the market though. SnapDrive isn't unstable (I have multiple happy people who think it isn't) ...I'm sure if you have any issues they can be sorted without looking for an alternative. Even better use SnapManager for SQL, this uses Microsoft APIs to ensure that not only the OS but the database is properly consistent during backups. Honestly though, if SnapDrive is causing you pain I'm sure it can be fixed - call up NetApp support and you'll get a good response. Submitting Suggestions to Netapp/CLI command builder

How would one go about submitting a suggestion to NetApp? I was thinking it would be nice, if while working in the Filer View GUI, your operations selected would build a command line "example" Say for instance you wanted to make a new volume from the GUI. You go to the volume section and you click Add. The wizard pops up. click next Select your volume type (flexible) click next Name the volume (vol1) Select language (en_US) Decide if you want to use UTF-8 or not (no) click next select the aggregate (aggr0) set your space guarantee (volume) click next choose volume size type (useable) choose volume size (100GB) set snapshot reserve (10%) click next now it shows all the options you picked in the text box. Create New Volume Volume Name: vol1 Aggregate Container: aggr0 (14TB, raid_dp,mirrored) Volume Size: 100 GB Snapshot Reserve: 10% Language: English (US) (en_US) Space Guarantee: volume I want it to add the command line example of all the choices you picked. Is there any way to configure ONTAP as an NFS client...through web interface or command line...??? i want to mount a SUN SOLARIS system (as NFS client) on ONTAP ABC qtree (using the mount command on SUN SOLARIS)...and then further mount the ABC volume/qtree of the filer (as NFS client) onto a UNIX system...any ideas or suggestions... snapmirror speed limit ?

hi all is there a limit, on the netapp side of things, that would prevent snapmirror traffic from increasing beyond 30mbits/sec ? -- eats the blues for breakfast, does unix for rent, plays harp for food, will play the flute for kicks rides for the freedom scrapes for the challenge
