All these while doiing a cf takeover. I talked to probably 10 Netapp support engineers and no one can explain it. Has anyone seen anything like this before? I have installed Host Utilities 5 and checked the windows registry to make sure the values have been tuned. Thanks Chris

snapvault retention questions

We're looking at using snapvault as a backup solution and after reading a bit of the documentation I was struck by the fact that it appears that the snapvault snap sched command can only schedule hourly, daily and weekly snapshots. Is there not a way to schedule monthly and yearly snapshots? Also, I don't see a way to specify that I want to keep one (or more) particular snapshots for a greater length of time without changing the whole destination volumes retention period. Is this correct? Thanks for any insight on this. -- Romeo Theriault

I figured out my problem -- I had over committed an aggregate when I was setting up my snapmirror dest volumes under DOT 7.2.4. Under 7.2.4 size guarantee was disabled for snapmirror dest volumes. The free space for the aggregate reported by "df -A" was exaggerated, so I mistakenly put too many dest volumes in the aggregate. When I added up the sizes of the volumes they exceeded the size of the aggregate and 7.3 complained about this. I moved one dest volume to a different aggregate and that fixed the problem. I also set the volume option "guarantee" to "volume" on the destination volumes since the upgrade left it in the state "volume(disabled)". Mounting read-only snapshots using open-iscsi?

We acquired a cluster of NetApp filers a few months ago with only an iSCSI license (no NFS or CIFS access), intending to use it for data volumes on our Linux and Windows hosts and later for virtualization. We have one production Gentoo system mounting a data volume from the filer using open-iscsi, and we have several other Gentoo and Ubuntu systems that we would like to configure that way as well. We also have an Ubuntu system connected to a tape library. We would like to take snapshots of the data-volumes that need to be backed up, mount those snapshots on the backup host, and do an incremental backup from the mounted filesystem. Probably we would partition each LUN with one Linux partition, and put an ext3 or reiserfs filesystem with a cluster-unique label on that partition. Then we could take a set of snapshots for the backup, map all the snapshot LUNs to the backup-host, do iSCSI discovery on the backup-host, mount each partition (listed in a configuration-file) with a "mount LABEL=..." command, perform the backup, unmount the partition, do an iSCSI logout, and delete all the snapshots. Toasters -- We are currently looking for a means to point a TSM NDMP mover at SMO-initiated snapshots. The TSM maintainers are currently defining 'virtual filesystem mappings' to point the TSM NDMP mover at WAFL snaps on non-Oracle volumes. This works like a champ due to consistent naming with scheduled WAFL snaps (nightly.0, etc). Since introducing SMO, we now have quiesced, consistent Oracle data in snapshots. Unfortunately the naming of these SMO snaps is nowhere near as graceful as 'nightly.0', to the chagrin of TSM. Has anyone here dealt with reconciling SMO snap name spew along with pointing a TSM NDMP mover at a consistently-named SMO snap space? Insight appreciated. Removing a shelf.

Hi all; We have a loaner NetApp that has three shelves on it. One of those shelves needs to be returned to the vendor. An aggregate spans two shelves, one of which is the shelf that needs to be returned. This aggregate contains a FlexVol currently in use. I'd like to preserve the FlexVol but remove the shelf. What are my options? Doesn't look like I can shrink an aggregate. Is my best bet to shut down everything usin the FlexVol, then vol copy it to another aggregate, destroy the original aggregate, remove the shelf and then recreate the aggregate again?
