Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? autosupport stops functioning

anyone else have this happen? suddenly one of our filers stops generating autosupport messages. both autosupport.enable and autosupport.support.enable are on. if i generate a test email with the autosupport.doit option nothing happens. not even a failed message, the console just sits there as if i never generated one. needless to say neither netapp or our email server gets anything from this filer and nothing hits the console about generating any autosupport emails.

Mac OS AFP support?

I've read TR 3472 "Integrating Mac(r) OS and NetApp Storage<http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3472.pdf>" http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3472.pdf and am aware of Thursby Software's DAVE: http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html, which is of course >$100/seat, depending on number of seats purchased. I would like to know if there is any plans to support AFP natively in Ontap? Has anyone found any other solution to allow for multiplatform (for example PC's and Macs) use of the filer without having to worry about the data fork/resource fork issues? A-SIS (NetApp De-Duplication)

Hello *, we are in the process of consolidating several NetApp filers and NearStore systems onto a single FAS30x0HA system. The system's main function is to serve primary data (part from FCAL disks, part from SATA disks), it's secondary function is to act as the NearStore system for a second site, storing the copy of the other site's data on SATA disks. Now we would like to try A-SIS to reduce the required physical storage. It looks as if in order to add A-SIS (a_sis license), I also need to install the NearStore license. Now my concern is, that by giving the system a NearStore personality I might impact the system's primary role - serving primary storage data to users. Has anyone experience with how a system changes when the NearStore licenses is enabled? Any negative impact for serving data to users? Is the NearStore personality activated by installing the nearstore license, or could we install the nearstore and a_sis license, but keep the nearstore personality deactivated? For data that we volume SnapMirror, would we need an A-SIS license on both sides - source and target system? Will the volume SnapMirror transfer less data (assuming that A-SIS de-dupe of data saved some of the required data blocks)? yes?!) Any other experience (good or bad) or concerns when using A-SIS? Any reason to not use it on all (home directory type data) volumes? Any limitation encountered? Any experience how much savings can be achieved (e.g. for home directories volumes, volume storing tons of application software packages)? Cheers --pwo -- Peter W. Hi Roger, Also a posible setup: the source is on a regular FAS system without nearstore personality and asis, but for DR you use qtree snapmirror to a nearstore. Your can turn on asis only on the destination. . You don't save space on the source, but you save a lot on the destination site. How to reinstate "quota logmsg" settings after a reboot

ONTAP 7.1.2 (and earlier versions) doesn't preserve "quota logmsg" settings over a reboot. There's a bug recorded for this (168726) at NOW, but it's only fixed in various 7.2.x releases, which I can't go to because I am stuck on an F8xx series filer :-( I tried putting an appropriate "quota logmsg" command at the end of /etc/rc (after "savecore"), but this didn't work for some reason. There's nothing in /etc/messages or /etc/log/auditlog that indicates it even tried to obey it. Any ideas? -- Chris Thompson Email: cet1(a)cam.ac.uk

Hi Steven I don't think Windows can mount NTFS read-only. You need to either break the mirror or FlexClone the dest vol. If using QSM, a LUN clone might work, but I haven't tried it. If you FlexClone, you should create a separate snapshot on the source to use as the baseline. If you use one of the SnapMirror snapshots, it could break SnapMirror (or so I've seen - others have said it depends on which SM snap you use). With vol SM, the dest is read-only which is why you put the snap on the source and let it replicate over. Share and Enjoy! Peter ... Sent from one of those phone+email doohicky things... We are working on a project that is housed in two separate buildings for disaster recovery. In each building we have a Windows server, a FAS270 filer and a FC SAN switch. The switches are not directly connected to each other, but we have long fibre runs so that each Windows server is connected to both switches. Each filer is connected to just its local FC switch. (This is a limitation of the FAS270, which has only one FC SAN port.) One filer is primary and the other is backup. On the primary filer I have a large volume containing a large LUN and this volume is being snapmirrored (synchronous) to the backup filer over ethernet. Both Windows servers can "see" both LUNs. We are using Windows clustering so that if the primary Windows server fails, the backup server will take over, using the primary LUN.
