Snapvault:

I have a number of volumes/qtrees on my primary filer. I am busy setting up snapvault on a secondary filer (both have an equal number of disks available to them). I was wondering which might be better in practice: a one-to-one relationship of volumes and qtrees on the primary and secondary; or to create the requisite number of qtrees on the secondary inside a single large volume. At the moment, I have 8Tbytes configured (4 volumes, 2 aggregates) on the primary (including snap reserve). I have about 5.5Tbytes of data to migrate onto the primary filer. I thought that SCSI to ISCI bridge would be cheaper, just not sure if it would work. I also have no FC switches. I was hoping to share the tape drive with the 2 heads of the filer (not sure if that is possible.) It looks like it requires a tape device to be connected to the Netapp. Has anyone used a ISCSI bridge to connect a standalone LTO3 tape drive to the filer? I was looking at Atto's iPBridge 1550D. I was assuming I could connect to HP Ultrium to the 1550D ISCSI bridge and connect it to the netapp. Anyone had any experience getting this to work? Symlinks and CIFS, FTP (and NFS)

I would like to manage the symlinks in use for the whole company at a certain directory depth on our filers (FAS3050 + OnTap 7.2.2). I would like to create the following setup so that users see a single share when they browse the filer via CIFS and FTP but give them access to data spread over more than 1 aggregate, volume and qtree. Filer_1 ======= Aggregate_1 Data_volume_1 Qtree_1 All_data (single share visible to company) Real_dir_1 Symlnk_Real_dir_2 Symlnk_Real_dir_3 Symlnk_Real_dir_4 Aggregate_2 Data_volume_2 Qtree_2 Real_dir_2 Data_volume_3 Qtree_3 Real_dir_3 Data_volume_4 Qtree_4 Real_dir_4 I am aware that I need to configure the widelinks option. How do I create the symlinks from my admin host (FreeBSD) which mounts all the volumes over NFS for data management purposes? I don't want to use a Windows machine to create the links. My users are Win2K and MacOSX clients and access their data using CIFS and FTP (NFS may be used later). I have a number of samba servers with this data directory setup as a single share visible to users but data spread over a number of disks. I use the unix "ln -s" command to create the necessary symlinks on the samba servers. Feel free to point out what may be glaringly obvious. Thanks Francois

Running reallocate - how long did it take, and can you stop/pause it?

We're about to run a reallocate, and we were wondering what we should expect. We have a heavily (over)utilized filer with many hot disks. We are worried that this reallocate could make it unusable for the duration - however long that may be. Has anyone been through this, and also can you stop or pause a reallocate? I actually have a level 0 that takes over 8 hours to pass file history info which means the dump does not start until that point. Just for kicks, you could modify your policy to have the first line as "set hist = n" (without quotes). This will kill the file history. You will be unable to restore files (directories only) and you will not have DAR which means you will have to read the ENTIRE backup tape or tape set. Instead of looking at pure size, do a "df -h" and a "df -i" to how much and how many (files) you are backing up. You can always dived the size used by the files used to see average file size. faulty snmp output?

Hi, I am just testing with some SNMP on our Filers. During some tests I mentioned something, I can't explain.
