Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? autosupport stops functioning

anyone else have this happen? suddenly one of our filers stops generating autosupport messages. both autosupport.enable and autosupport.support.enable are on. if i generate a test email with the autosupport.doit option nothing happens. not even a failed message, the console just sits there as if i never generated one. needless to say neither netapp or our email server gets anything from this filer and nothing hits the console about generating any autosupport emails.

Mac OS AFP support?

I've read TR 3472 "Integrating Mac(r) OS and NetApp Storage<http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3472.pdf>" http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3472.pdf and am aware of Thursby Software's DAVE: http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html, which is of course >$100/seat, depending on number of seats purchased. I would like to know if there is any plans to support AFP natively in Ontap? Has anyone found any other solution to allow for multiplatform (for example PC's and Macs) use of the filer without having to worry about the data fork/resource fork issues? Yes, the macs can talk both CIFS and NFS, the problem is that all files touched by the macs look like this: -rw-r--r-- 1 501 foo 82 Jun 6 16:55 ._NTAP AAPL3472.pdf -rw-r--r-- 1 501 foo 699229 Jun 1 15:45 NTAP AAPL3472.pdf

Hi, I'm evaluating snapmirror for qtree migration from our existing filers running 6.5.4P8 to a newly purchased FAS3040 running 7.2.2 I have configured snapmirror and managed to figure out how to do the initial transfer but I can't seem to get the following ... I would like to be able to stop (and resume at a later time) both the initial and any later updates if I find that they are impacting the production system. Tried: quiesce, break & resync, break & resume Please help. George

find busiest flexvols in an aggregate?

we have many flexvols in a large aggregate. our filer 960C is always 100% cpu and about 11,000 to 18,000 nfs ops/sec. some people have started complaining about performance. how can we tell what flexvols may be overutilized or consuming most of the traffic so we can perhaps migrate them elsewhere? also we only have two fibre loops with 7 shelves on each loop, if we added a third and split them down to about 4 shelves or so per loop would that improve i/o?

Odd problem since upgrade to FAS6030

We recently upgraded to a FAS6030 running 7.2.2. Since the upgrade our developers (they run VMWare Workstation 5.5) have been complaining that the connection to their H: drives is dropping. They receive a message about "You are now in off-line mode". When the filer is pinged, it does respond and the H: drive will reconnect eventually. The regular work stations are having no problems with this. Only the VMWare users. Have not been able to find any relevant docs in a Google search yet... Thought I'd post here in case someone has seen this. Thanks. Scsi sense check/tape backup errors.

So I have an FAS3020 running 7.0.2 It has been repurposed to handle production data and as such we need to back it up. Cifsconfig_share.cfg

We need to replicate the definitions for all cifs shares of files from a particular volume to our DR filer. For the moment I'm probably going to manually copy all the relevant lines from etc/cifsconfig_share.cfg on the production filer and paste it into the corresponding file on the DR filer, but I'm a little concerned by occasional groups of 6-8 rows of hash marks / pound signs (#) I see scattered throughout the file. Does anyone know what these represent? I was thinking maybe onTAP deletes old shares by replacing their relevant lines in cifsconfig_share.cfg with #s, but that seems like an ugly way to achieve the goal.
