It really depends on your situation. FlexVols on small systems can be really useful, especially if you need multiple volumes or have small data sets. The ability to allow small volumes to be striped across lots of disks could easily outweigh any memory cache performnace issues. I'm not saying Blake's necessarily wrong here, it's just that like most interesting questions, the answer is usually "It depends". Suggestions regarding migration from 740 to 270

Hi: Recently, we elected to replace our primary 740 (we have two) with a 270. The 740, running 6.4.5, has traditional volumes whereas the 270, running 7.0.4, has flex volumes. I'm using ndmpcopy to migrate volumes from the old box to the new. My question concerns snapshots. I was told that I can't use ndmpcopy to migrate the snapshot (if that's not true, feel free to tell me). Anyway, we have some user-created snapshots that hold important changes. I'm looking for suggestions on getting the information contained in the snapshots migrated. Shouldn't matter whether backing up QTrees or Volumes for this issue. It appears that the request to mount a tape drive is timing out. We had the same issue with timeouts using Legato under OnTap 6.something. I'm almost sure our storage group addressed this by switching to a Qtree backup. Rather than backing up the entire volume, they now back up qtrees. I have to inform them if I add or remove a qtree now. Newbie: Question about 3rd party shelve with NetApp 3020

I am working with two NetApp 3020s and I was wondering how difficult is it to connect non-NetApp equipment. I haven't found a lot of info with this particular hardware so I thought someone here might help. Essentially we want to use our netapp branded shelves for the important stuff since they are fully covered under service agreement, but we would like to have some cheaper storage for transitory files and short term projects which doesn't have the same reliability needs. If I could attach a less expensive disk shelf to the filer head I think I would be in good shape. I just don't want to buy a fibre channel disk shelf and then find out it doesn't work.
