Sounds like your NT-ADMIN-USER -> root mapping is not working. After logging into the machine you want to use "computer management" from, Map to a drive. Get on the filer and do "cifs sessions" You should see your machine and who you mapped to. If it is not mapping to root, that may be why you cannot manage. Does "root" exist in /etc/password? If not, it needs to be added. simply root::0:1::: is all that is needed. cifs terminate machine-name and then re-connect. Gabriel, Could you elaborate a bit? You mention that the unix machines are a member of domain A - I assume you mean SAMBA member servers? Are these the machines you are trying to use to manage the 'partner'? When you run CIFS setup, are you doing so in NT4 or AD-type domains? Do you have WINS? (With NT4 domains, you must pre-create the computer account, but WINS entries are added automatically - with AD, the computer account is pre-created, but the DNS entries are not added automatically - DDNS is fixed in 7.1 I believe). Are you getting a specific error message when you try to manage it via computer managers? Can you connect to it at all, or is there a permissions problem (a filer administrator account is required to manage the computer via the MMC). FYI - groups cannot be added via MMC... Mixed Mode

Does anyone know the future of the security mode -- "mixed mode"? Several co-workers returned from NetApp training stating that this particular mode is not encouraged and may be dropped in the not too distant future from NetApp support. Has anyone else heard this or can confirm this to any degree? We are about to set up a new Filer and I'm trying to decide what to do with a volume that is currently configured for mixed mode security on an old Filer. If anyone has experiences changes from mixed mode to either all CIFS or NFS, I'd appreciate their inputs as well. Thanks. Tracy

RE: NetApp FC SAN - Experiences

I have very limited long-term experience with the SAN capabilities of our 3020c (one head used for FCP - one shelve with 10k 144 gb drives), but so far everything seems to be just as great as the NAS capabilities. We're using it for storing Exchange 2003 (2-node cluster), and VMware ESX (3 VMware nodes) and haven't noticed disk performance being a bottleneck. I don't think you can use Powerpath, NetApp have their own software for multipathing - SnapDrive. Not sure how a 3050c compares to the CX700, but I believe there is a whitepaper that compares a filer with a CX500 on NetApp's website. In regards to the IBM and the ONTAP revisions

Hey guys, Wanted to send a quick note about the release tree of IBM branded ontap. Does NetApp suspect that the release trees will co-inside? Or is it suspected that IBM will go through it's own evaluations before releasing a revision later then NetApp does? Also do they have the ability to make there own changes other than branding? Or can I expect the release to be the same as what I can get from the now site? As always thanks in advance. -Grey

Hp storageworks MSL 5000 with GF920

Hi, just wondered if anyone has any experience of setting up an HP storageworks MSL 5000 with a GF920.It's connected via a SCSI card but the tape drive is unusable. I've tried the following and wondered if I've missed anything obvious! we've been given an HP Storageworks MSL 5000 tape library which contains a Compaq SuperDLT1 drive.This is connected to a X2027 Adaptec SCSI card as supplied by netapp. Problem is that the drive is recognised as non-qualified so won't work. I've tried various suggestions from the NOW site but can't get it to work eg should be the same drive as the Quantum SuperDLT1/SDLT220 so I've setup a cloned_tapes file with the following emulation (from solution ntapcs8340).
