If you plan on taking snapshots of your Luns (one of the primary reasons for using Netapp), then you will need SnapDrive, which works with the MS API to flush "dirty writes" prior to telling the Netapp to take its snapshot. Now you CAN take snapshots through the netapp scheduler, but the filesystem in the LUN won't be consistent. Also, if you have SnapMirror, SnapDrive initiates a replication after the snapshot. So if you have recovery on the brain, you want SnapDrive. Running all of ours without snapdrive. If you have standard and static configurations with only small scale or "niche" implementations, it works a treat. Snapdrive can assist if you are planning a lot of LUN manipulation. i.e. snapshots of LUNS, Changing mappings between hosts, drives etc. Or if you are "dumbing" it down for simpler and scalable administration, Snapdrive is a good value proposition. Essentially it should help to keep operations costs down, one of the strongest drivers for any centralised storage implementation. If you have a very dynamic environment with many hundreds of hosts, I think there are better storage platforms than NetApp with more scalable software "suites". Yes we are. The only issue is that with out snapdrive you'll have to use another utility like diskpart to extend the partition, if you change it's size. Depends on what you are doing... If you need to quickly provision LUNs or connect to snapshot versions of them, it's very useful. If you need to take a snapshot (consistent snapshot) of a filesystem, it's almost impossible to live without. If you never intend to back up a LUN (snapshot) or mount many, you may not need it. Netapp Snapdrive and Novell OES based on SuSe Linux kernel

Hi, Anybody out there who has some experience in setting up Snapdrive for Linux with Novell Open Enterprise Server base don the SuSe linux kernel? I was wondering if this is a supported solution and if it will work. Especially the snapdrive feature to connect a novell server to a snapshot of a Netapp LUN for single file restore.
