Lotus Notes

Has anyone installed, implemented, deployed Lotus Notes with a NetApp filer? I know there "SnapManager for Lotus Notes" doesn't exist so how can I do this with the same functionality and SME, and SMBR for that matter. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Hi Brian, Number of NFS daamons used by Data OnTAP on any NetApp filer is, and has always been, exactly zero. Note on all NetApp specsfs submissions (www.spec.org/sfs97r1): "NetApp's embedded operating system processes NFS requests from the network layer without any NFS daemons, and uses non-volatile memory to improve performance." Data OnTAP is not Unix, and is not even "based on" any particular Unix, despite a large number of CLI similarities. The microkernal is developed from the ground up as special-purpose. (i.e. this is not a "stripped down" or modified Linux or FreeBSD product like so many others out there). So you can't directly apply many Unix considerations for performance management to Data OnTAP. SnapVault - Question on hourly vaults

Hello all, We use a single SnapVault filer as a repository for 6 separate filers. With the nightly SnapVault schedules we are able to balance source filer connection limits by staggering the vaults in between 10pm-6am as the business requirement doesn't dictate a specific time for these to occur overnight. We would like to also move the hourly snapshot schedule to this SnapVault filer. However, the standard daytime snap schedule is at 8,12,16 for all filers, and it can't deviate. We have about 400 qtree's to vault so at 8am when they all try to vault at once I get lots of failures due to source connection limits. We can't stagger these times since the business areas all expect their snap to be from those specific times. We could keep the hourly's on the source filers rather than moving them to our SnapVault filer, but we would like to recoup that expensive FC disk for non-snapshot duties by moving the snaps to cheaper ATA on the SnapVault filer. Any suggestions? The retries are set at 2 and bandwidth is throttled at 100MB/s. Thanks! Thanks for the CIFS info, I remembered someone mentioning this, but had a hard time finding any documentation on this. You are making out the iSCSI thing out to be a lot worse than it really is. You can mount snapshots as writeable volumes to the server and copy of files out of them into the main LUN. This is particularly easy with SnapDrive, and takes all of 5 minutes to have a snapshot mounted. You can then copy the files off. This makes recovery of individual mailboxes easy, without requiring a lot of space. Additionally to backup, you mount the snapshot of the LUN to a server and read the files off using a host agent rather than just backing up the LUN files, this allows quicker recovery from tape for individual nsf files. All of this is easy to accomplish with SnapDrive. I like the CIFS method as recovery from snapshots is easy, but if you have a lot of traffic this can be an issue (CIFS isn't a particularly fast protocol compared to iSCSI). Anyway just wanted to clear that up a little. As far as I remember NetApp recommend you use the AUTOEXNT.EXE (resource kit tool) to run a batch file which maps your drive/s when the server starts and you must also run domino as a service rather than an application (a choice during install). Domino is happy to access data files on mapped drives. Don't forget if you decide to use iSCSI you have to have an area big enough on your filer to restore the entire LUN just to retrieve one email (potentially). Also, your user would have to wait for the entire LUN to be restored from tape if you don't have a snapshot available. Flexclone may help with this but I'm not sure as I've not used it. The beauty of this is that restore can be done easily and quickly from regular snapshots as .NSF files are pretty robust. As far as clustering goes I would recommend using Domino application clustering over windows clustering especially if you have more than one site with decent bandwidth between them. It will give you a full DR solution and means you don't have to buy a snapmirror license if your using the filer exclusively for Domino as domino can handle replication pretty efficiently. I also recommend that if you have roaming profiles hosted on a filer you keep your users personal notes data files (there are about 4 or 5 main ones such as address book) somewhere in the profile. Just means you can recover these just as easily. optimize volume/qtree for oracle db

Hi, currently we are running an oracle db on an FAS6070c and today we had some complaints that for some hours operations which use a lot of getattr-ops, like ls -la does, are slower than they used to be. An oracle-colleague told me that he thinks there is a best-pratcise for volumes with oracle-db inside which describes something that boosts up getattr's. I did not find anything appropriate on NOW. There once was a product called SnapManager for Domino (or was it Lotus Notes?)... at any rate, it was discontinued because the need was no longer there: As many have pointed out, Lotus does a good job of recovering itself after a normal filer-based snapshot. Since it's BOTH FC ports on both heads at the same time, I'm inclined to believe your switch rebooted.
