I think that means the SNMP counters are cactus (more accurately, they've gotten into a state that doesn't give information) I've seen this a couple of times running 6.5.2r1 and the only solution was to reboot the filer. There is a bug in a few version of DOT 6 which causes this. I know it's persent in 6.5.2R1 but it's fixed in later versions of 6. Have noticed that the CPU usage stats are not being displayed in DFM also the CPU usage stats are not showing up in Filer at a glance. Looks like we stopped getting stats about two weeks ago. CIFS, NFS and network use stats are still coming in properly. The DFM client software seems to have current CPU usage stats though. Anyone have an idea about how to get CPU usage to show up again? OnTap 7 and Samba

Greetings, I am having some difficulties accessing our filers with OnTap 7 via Linux. Perhaps someone in this list could point me in the right direction. The version of Linux is Open Enterprise Server (minimal install) which makes it functionally equivalent to SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 SP1. It is running Kernel 2.6.5-155-smp and Samba 3.0.14a (originally 3.0.9 but updated when issues surfaced). The filers I have tried accessing consist of FAS270s and a R200. They are using FlexVols and OnTap 7. Data shares are available via CIFS and NFS and are configured with NTFS Security Mode. The filers are members of an Active Directory Domain (Windows Server 2003 PDC). I have a number of odd issues that have surfaced. Issue 1; -------- smbmount returns permission denied and odd path presentation. The Linux box is a member of the active directory domain. I can use wbinfo to list domain users and groups, as well as getent passwd and group. I am able to authenticate via kerberos, and can use smbmount against Windows server shares fine. However, when I attempt to mount a share on a NetApp filer using mount -t smbfs -o username=someuser,workgroup=THEDOMAIN //NETAPP/SHARE /mnt/SHARE the operation appears to complete successfully. If I enter mount I can see the /mnt/SHARE as active. If I travese into the /mnt/SHARE folder and type ls I get a permission denied error. Syslog shows kernel: smb_lookup: find /// failed, error=-13. After some digging it appears that error=-13 is an EACCESS authentication issue. So I assumed I did not have permissions. If I type ls -alFG from the /mnt folder in Linux there is no /mnt/SHARE directory. If I type ls there is one, and if I unmount /mnt/SHARE then type ls -alFG the directory is there. In further troubleshooting I can browse the share from Windows, and from the same Linux workstation smbclient //NETAPP/SHARE -U someuser -W THEDOMAIN allows me to browse succesfully. Issue 2; -------- /bin/ls: reading directory .: Cannot allocate memory If I mount the same share via cifs (mount -t cifs -o user=someuser,domain=THEDOMAIN //NETAPP/SHARE /mnt/SHARE) the operation completes with no error. If I cd into /mnt/SHARE then type ls I get the error above (/bin/ls: reading directory .: Cannot allocate memory). If I continue to type ls it will eventually display the directory. If I cd into a subfolder the error returns. Both of these operations work fine against a Windows 2003 Server share. Does anyone have any ideas? The messages file on the filer itself does not provide any significant error messages. Thank you very much for any information anyone can provide. NetApp F740

Hi - hoping someone can help me with a disk problem with the above filer. Been running an F740 with NetApp Release 5.3.6R2 installed. The filer is out of warranty / cover but the filer has been with me since new so the O/S was the latest I could get at the time & the licenses for NFS / CIFS tie up. A drive failed several months ago but this was no problem as the host spare got used. The failed drive is a Seagate Cheetah ST336704FC HH. Some time later I installed a new drive we had, but this drive wasn't supported & the filer stated this and caused a reboot of the filer. No problem I thought and simply left the bay empty. So the filer is running just fine. Just with no hot spare. The output of sysconfig (-v) gave me: slot 1: Fibre Channel Host Adapter 1 6 Disks: 207.0GB 1 shelf with VEM 1: NETAPP X225_ST336704FC NA41 Size=34.5GB (71687369 blocks) 0: SEAGATE ST136403FC NA13 Size=34.5GB (71132960 blocks) 4: NETAPP X225_ST336704FC NA42 Size=34.5GB (71687369 blocks) 5: NETAPP X225_ST336704FC NA42 Size=34.5GB (71687369 blocks) 2: SEAGATE ST136403FC NA13 Size=34.5GB (71132960 blocks) 3: SEAGATE ST136403FC NA13 Size=34.5GB (71132960 blocks) Shelf 0: VEM Kernel Version : 2.5 App. Version : 3.1 *Note* "6:" or drive 1.6 is not shown, this is the failed / removed disk. From the output above I assumed (1st mistake) that the drives in the filer must be either Seagate ST336704FC or ST136403FC. And got hold of a few ST136403FC (Full Height) second hand and attempted to replace a disk again, using the following process from the command line: disk_swap <insert new disk> vol status -r All looked good the scan for shelves / disks completed without error and all the drive lights are on. But vol status -r OR sysconfig -v does not show the new disk? Tried the same again but this time simply removed & replaced the new drive. Still the same, no new disk being shown. The only other command I could think of using was shelfchk which when run asks "Are these LEDs all ON now" and yes they are, even the new disk? But I cannot access the new disk. So my question is does anyone know if the disks Seagate Cheetah ST136403FC are compatible with an F740 and if so what am I doing wrong when trying to replace a failed disk. Thanks - Julian. Windows Vista and OnTap

Hello, Has anyone tried to access a Filer from Longhorn Beta 1 aka Windows Vista? We tried it in our Lab (Win 2K3 Domain) and it looks as if the Kerberos authentication is not working. The filers are running 7.0.0.1RxPy and 7.1RC1. A Longhorn workstation which is not part of a domain can access a filer using NTLM auth. A Longhorn client which is a member of the same domain tries to use Kerberos Authentication and fails to access the filer with an "unexpected network error". The Longhorn workstation is able to access other Windows 2003 and Windows 2000 servers. Other XP clients can access the filer using Kerberos authentication without any problems. But I'm glad to see that the NetApp does not panic when accessed by the Longhorn Beta 1. I remember the first time we tried to access a Filer using the Windows 2000 Beta - the filer crashed at the moment the client tried to open a share. Has anyone else seen the same problem? Or even better, is it working anywhere? Carsten

We did not open a case for NFS, but we did for the CIFS and Samba issues. I will open a ticket for NFS with NTFS Security mode. I am wondering if it would just be easier to run Mixed mode though. I can't really identify a downside to mixed mode. The open ticket for CIFS and Samba issues has been responded to. A NetApp support agent said that mount -t cifs issues could be a bug in OnTap 7, and they will begin evaluating our findings in a testing lab. As far as mount -t smbfs (Samba), the official line is that Samba is not supported and I will have to inquire with the Samba mailing list (which I have done). Of course Samba pins the issue back at NetApp. So is there an unofficial line I can try ;). Unfortunately the machine is out of maintenance. It has old X219F, X221D, X225B, X233A and X234B drives. I saw on NOW that these are all pretty much EOA drives. X219F is even End of Hardware Support. Does that mean basically you can't get them from NetApp at all? For the other drives, we are checking to see if we can get support for them. Although for 2 month, maybe we are better off just purchasing them from support? Is that something that we can readily do? What kind of turn-around can we expect?
