formula for calculating the max number of disks on a loop without losing performance

We currently have a FAS940C cluster. Each of the FAS940 has 2 DS14 shelves of 36 GB drives and 1 DS14 shelf of 72 GB drives (a total of 6 shelves). Each of the FAS940 has only 1 FC dual-channel Host Adapter: slot 4: FC Host Adapter 4a (Dual-channel, QLogic 2312 rev. 2, 64-bit, L-port, <UP>) We are trying to isolate some performance problem we are encourtering. How do we find out if the host adapter is the bottleneck? Does anyone have a formula for calculating how many drives can be put on a single loop without losing performance. Thanks. Derek

Hello everyone, I need help with implementing SCSI in NDMP for a NetApp filer. Anyone familiar with SCSI development will know the elements and the address assignnments of to those elements by CDB's sent to the SCSI device. I have used MODE_SENSE and READ_ELEMENT_STATUS in order to do that. But, i believe i am not unpacking the reply correctly to assign addresses to the elements. Its because when i send the POSITION_TO_ELEMENT or MOVE_MEDIUM, i use those elements addresses (Transport element, Data Transfer element and Storage element) and i get sense key indicating that the CDB was incorrect. Data ONTAP 6.1.3 running on an F520

Greetings Toaster Fans, Has anyone out there successfully run ONTAP 6.1.3 or later on an F520 running both CIFS and NFS? We are planning on migrating the data to an R150 later this year but are doing an AD migration which is not supported under 5.3.7R3 and are looking for a quick fix. We have done some preliminary testing with a spare head and 6.1.3 installed without a hitch. In addition we have created some CIFS share which are working correctly. Regards, Joseph C. Wow another person using Macs! I will have to start looking at DFS more closely. We are stuck at 10.2.8 until we get rid of Outlook 2001:Mac which bombs all the time under 10.3 When you say 10.3 is better...is that the native smb support gets better or is there something else. I know that 10.2.6 and 10.2.8 built-in SMB performance was significantly less than with Dave ...something like 20-30% less. For reference, we churn 800 - 1.2 TB per night, out of 40 TB online, and the first-phase backup window (filer to stage pools) is 4 - 6 hours long. Then the data moves from staging pool to tape, outside the backup window. Disk manufacturers use decimal-based numbers for disk sizes, so that a 146GByte drive is 146*1000*1000*1000 bytes. I have heard that this is due to legal requirements, but I am not a lawyer. Most software, including DataONTAP, uses 1024*1024*1024 to mean a Gigabyte. So a 146Gbyte disk drive (146*1000*1000*1000) is actually 136GBytes of usable disk space. My impression is that NetApp is one of the few vendors who are actually straight forward about this. On their quotes for new systems, they have a field for "usable space", which is based on 1024*1024*1024 calculations AND they deduct for snapshots.
