Dear, Naturally, this letter will come to you as a surprise since we have not met, permit me however, I am Mr. tony Francis, a Zimbabwean Farmer. I am contacting you as the need to for me to have a foreign partner in your country has become necessary due to my plans to relocate and establish a private company in that region, as the present political instability in my country Zimbabwe, does not encourage financial investment as the environment is not conducive for investment and most of all security is not insured, just as reported by international media. This problem started when the Zimbabwean government under the leadership of President Robert Mugabe announced a degree on May 31st 2000 to seize more than 849 white-owned farms. So far, more than 1,400 white owned farms have been invaded and confiscated, as well as claiming the properties of the farmers. During these periods, as reported by international media and the CNN, more than 6 white farmers were killed, the government is not stopping at this, as just recently the government have asked all white-farmers to give up their farms to black farmers or risk going to prison. Having lived in this country Zimbabwe for more than 35 years, I have no other country to go to, nor can I trace any of my distant relatives. Therefore, I decided to contact you, for your assistance, so that I can establish a company in your country and relocate there. Also, I must re-iterate the importance of having a citizen of your country to front as the owner of the enterprise, due to the fact that I am a foreigner. For this purpose, I have put in a security deposit all monies from the sale of my farm and farming equipments (including tractors etc) which amounted to US$14.5Million, I will upon receiving your consent prepare every document to enable you receive this money on my behalf, pending my arrival to meet with you in your country so that we can both make further arrangements with regards to establishing the company. As a partner you will be entitled to 20% stake in whichever company that you both decide to establish when I arrive your country. I am waiting urgently for your response. Cheers and God bless. We have this working in two different modes. RE: Legato and NDMP

We use legato to backup over NFS mounts and it works perfectly. Note: must be hard mounts, not automounter. In fact, we have just installed and R100 and R150 to do staging via legato. The idea being we suck the data on to the R100 quickly and then move it onto tape at our leisure. Snapvault is going to fit in there for fast retrieval. The bonus is that it can be used just like normal Legato restores using the Disk Backup/NetApp Nearstore module for Legato. quotas and unix automount

Hi, Is it possible, with individual user quotas and automount, to have mount points reflect the user's quota? Peoplesoft cache

Hello Toasters, I ran into a weird problem with Peoplesoft (PS). The client run PS from the Citrix Metaframe 1.8 server with the PS database on the Unix Server. The client cache folder resides on F760c (ONTAP 6.3.1R1, Gig NIC). The cache folder has the client's configuration settings when the app is started. With this setup, it takes about 5minutes to load the app and 100MB of traffic exchange between the Filer and the Citrix server. Even though the cache folder only has about 1.5MB of files. I'm not an expert in decoding network traces but it show a lot retransmission packets size of 1.4MB with no data. But when I moved the cache folder to another NT server or Filer F820 (ONTAP 6.3.1R1, Gig NIC), the app loads in 10secs. Any ideas? thanks, Marcus Bui

I was told this never made it to the list. If it is the case that it made the list, but was blocked at NetApp, please excuse the noise. Most move algorithms are: move(old, new) if (!rename(old, new)) { copy(old, new) if (is_dir(old)) { foreach entry in old { move(old/entry, new/entry) } delete(old) } In pre-6.4 systems, we always failed a rename() for directories and files between qtrees. In 6.4 systems, we allow renames() for files across qtrees, but not directories across qtrees. A rename() results in the inode and none of the data nodes, being modified. Thus a 10G file gets moved as fast or as slow as a 1k file. Allowing the rename() of the dir adds too much complexity in that we would have to handle atomicity, recovery, users modifying subdirs, multiple hard links inside the directory (detecting whether it stayed within the tree or not), and so on. Handling just the files reduces the majority of the IO with a resulting savings in time and space. I.e., the inode is all that changed, so that the snapshot ends up with about 4 dirty blocks and not effectively 2 per data block in the file. BTW: The FSF implementation of mv, as seen in most Linux distros, etc, has an optimization which states that if a directory can not be renamed, then its children can also not be renamed. FSF have removed that in coreutils-4.5.2 such that mv will take advantage of this new feature in OnTap 6.4. --------------------------------------------- Chris Thompson asked: > What happens if the file being rename()'d has multiple hard links? Even if you use the unix "mv" command, when crossing a qtree boundary mv must copy and delete. Since you have limited free space, you may need to copy and delete each mailbox individually. If you are using snapshots, this will obviously gobble up most if not all of your snapshot reserve, so you may need to delete all your snapshots beforehand. We've just received a nice new F825, which we're trying to integrate into our exsiting Legato Networker backup system. I've been speaking to our Legato support, but they're not getting very far, and each day that passes is another day for us without backups. We have a Quantum ATL1500 jukebox directly attached (Robot controller and one drive) to a Sun box, which is a Legato storage node. The 2nd SCSI drive is connected to the back of our F825, which picks it up fine, and is configured as an NDMP device in Networker. Now, the problem is, Networker complains that it can't establish an NDMP connection to the F825, even tho NDMP is enabled on the F825, and I've double-checked the username is root and the password is correct. Attempting to do an inventory in nwadmin fails on either device in the jukebox. Also, NDMP doesn't do incrementals the normal way, so I was thinking of just backing up the F825 over the NFS mounts, but I hear that's not a good idea with Legato. We're running DOT 6.3.1r1 and Legato Networker 6.1.3. Anyone have any suggestions, apart from "stop using Legato"?
