(The simulator runs all of ONTAP as a process under Linux. At a very low level, we spoof the disk drivers, so that disks are simulated by local files. We spoof the network drivers by putting the Linux Ethernet card into promiscuous mode and creating a fake MAC address associated with the simulator.) Enough technical details. The point of this message is that we are now making the simulator available to customers so that they can experiment with ONTAP features and commands without putting production systems at risk. I have had many customers tell me that they wished they had a way to play with new releases and new features, but they didn't have a safe place to do it. Just to be clear: This is not production software. It's ONTAP running on top of Linux, so don't use it for performance testing. We have no formal support program. Don't call NetApp support. This is an "as is" tool. (Some restrictions may apply. :-) On the other hand, I think you will find the simulator to be very useful for experimenting with ONTAP. Hundreds of NetApp engineers use it every day, and we have been using the simulator for over a year in NetApp training classes. Not only can you experiment with the features of a single filer, but you can run multiple simulators and experiment with features like SnapMirror, SnapVault, and Cluster Fail Over. It doesn't support Fibre Channel, because that would take more hardware, but it does support iSCSI and all of the other TCP/IP protocols, including NFS, CIFS, HTTP and FTP, as well as network management protocols like SNMP and NDMP. Here are some details: You can download the simulator from NOW at <http://now.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/simulator>. We have created a category in the NOW community forums called "ONTAP Simulator" that can be accessed at <http://forums.netapp.com/showcategory.asp?cid=172>. And finally, we have created a majordomo mailing list that people can join at xdl-simulator(a)netapp.com. (You know the drill. To join send to majordomo(a)netapp.com, not to the simulator list itself.) And of course, feel free to talk about it here on toasters. As I said above, the simulator is NOT formally supported, but some volunteers at NetApp have agreed to informally answer questions to the xdl-simulator mailing list. Have fun! SNMP values keeps changing after every reboot. any solution to fix this?

Every time the filer is rebooted. the snmp values for disk changes. This affects our mrtg monitoring. Is there a script that helps overcome this issue? How are others monitoring disk usage using mrtg? cifs audit

I have F820 running DOT 6.4.2P6 with CIFS only. I noticed the cifs audit log does not log all events. The audit log is dump and saved every night at midnight via a rsh script. Looking through several log file, there are only a few entries in each of the file. All of the entries are within 16 minutes after midnight when the audit file is dump. These are the settings. I compare it with two other Filers, F880c DOT 6.4.2P12, with the same settings the audit log worked fine. cifs.audit.enable on cifs.audit.file_access_events.enable on cifs.audit.logon_events.enable on cifs.audit.logsize 204800000 cifs.audit.saveas /etc/log/adtlog.evt Any ideas? thanks, Marcus Bui ----------------------------------------- Confidentiality Note: The information contained in this message, and any attachments, may contain confidential and/or privileged material. Boot menu problem on F760

Hi, We have a new F760 we just got here - powered it on, booted 6.4.2 from floppy and then used the normal install program to install 6.4.3 over NFS. Everything is fine, but when the machine powers on, it always goes to the menu that it displays when you boot off of the floppy (i.e. 1) normal boot 4) intialize disks, etc). This happens even though there's no floppy in the drive. Is there a flag I can set/unset somewhere that will disable this behavior and have it boot straight to the main OS? disk_update_fw

Sorry if this is a really basic question. I booted off of floppies (5.3.5R2, I believe it was), and reinitialized the array, took a couple of hours, all seemed to go well. But when it was done, it complained about the firmware revision on all the drives, and recommended I run disk_fw_update. However that command does not seem to be one of the available commands when booting from the floppy (and I can't boot from the array yet). What am I missing? Again, sorry if this is a pretty basic question. Any help would be appreciated.

quota report error?

I believe the problem we are having is either a reporting error by 'quota report' or a file system object error. The problem is that we have 4 quota trees that are completely empty but 'quota report' is still showing there is space being used in them. A month ago we moved about 600GB of data from different volumes on 8 740's and 2 230's to newer filers. All of the migrated data was Unix and all were in UNIX type qtree's. All data was moved successfully. The 4 qtrees below had all data migrated off of them, but are still showing space, and files, in quota report: tree 1 vol2 filer1.201 3044 4 89 - /vol/vol2/filer1.201 tree 1 vol1 filer2.101 27272 4 23 - /vol/vol1/filer2.101 tree 5 vol0 filer3.005 60 4 5 - /vol/vol0/filer3.005 tree 3 vol0 filer4.003 2596 4 6 - /vol/vol0/filer4.003 Filer1, filer2, and filer4 are running 6.3.3 and filer3 is running 6.3.1R1. I worked on this with NetApp support and they are not sure what is causing this. They are asking for down-time to further diagnose this, which is not very likely to happen anytime soon. We've tried just about everything with turning quota's on and off and removing and recreating qtrees, to no avail. We also ran wafl iron on one of the volumes. Any other idea's? There is a gotcha, CIFS requires that a passwd file with the following minimum entries: notesnetapp::5432:5432::/: nobody::65535:65535::/: pcuser::65534:65534::/: root::0:1::/: By default this file does not exist and if you are running NFS when you invoke CIFS setup NO passwd file is created. Easiest way to correct this is to shutdown NFS and re-run CIFS setup which will create the required passwd file. Have fun...
