Many search engines point to a "NetApp Filer administrators archive list" at the URL http://teaparty.mathworks.com:1999/toasters/index.html. This URL seems to be unavailable. NT/filer slowdown

Some of our users in a large NT/filer environment experience a huge sporadic slowdown (20 min OK, 5 min slow) when a filer or NT BDC work with distant DCs through the secure channels over WAN links. Symptoms: windows explorer frozen, save as... in Word frozen/slow, filer share mapping lost, logon impossible, etc. Please tell me if you have experienced the similar problems... Can it be related to the WINS, DFS or some other configuration? Regards, Deni Smailbegovic

Visiting Network Appliance (OT)

Somewhat off-topic... I'm in the Mountain View area for the next couple of days (Monday and Tuesday), and was wondering if it would be possible to pay a meaningful visit to Netapp HQ or something. CIFS permissions

I have a share (mixed security style) with several subdirectories. Most of the directories are NT style permission. One directory has continually had bizarre permissions problems (files seem to go back to Unix style permissions even when the "allow inheritable permission to propagate" flag is checked). I can go into more detail if necessary, but I think I might know what the problem is. This is the only directory that has the "Archive" attribute set (visible in both the General tab & the Secure Share tab under Properties). Could this account for the permissions problems? /etc/rmtab

From time to time, it is useful to see which NFS clients might currently be NFS-mounting software from a NetApp server. On a typical UNIX fileserver, the mount daemon maintains a text-format file "/etc/rmtab" (or similar) which can quickly be browsed (or grep'ped etc.). I see that NetApp also has an "/etc/rmtab" file, which seems to record similar information. But: (a) it seems undocumented; (b) it is not text-formatted, but seems rather to be a four-byte binary entry-length followed by the entry itself. Now whilst I could quickly hack together a C program or perl-script to make this human-readable, it would seem worthwhile to ask: (a) is "/etc/rmtab" supported? (b) is it documented? (page number?) (c) are there already some established and accepted ways to make its contents human-readable? (d) is there a FilerView (WWW) way of seeing the information in here? -- : David Lee I.T. hiding "." files?

Background: Most of our desktops are Windows, and most users are Windows-based, but the back-end servers have historically been UNIX-based (Samba for CIFS access), and we put a few "." files in place for each user, in case they use UNIX directly. Under UNIX, filenames beginning with "." are conventionally regarded as hidden: for example they don't show in the output from "ls". Similarly, when a UNIX filesystem is viewed via Samba from a Windows box, again the "." files are hidden from the users. We have just acquired two NetApp fileservers, running 6.1.2R1, and have noticed that the "." files are presented to the (mostly Windows) users. While this isn't a show-stopper, we wondered whether there was a option of telling the NetApp to classify "." files as hidden. Or something similar. chown in .snapshot ?

Hi I'm facing a boring problem I've changed the UID of a UNIX user and now he is unable to read in old .snapshot because he is not the owner of old files . is there a way to perform a chown in .snapshot directories when I try the filer answers the filesystem is readonly ... thx for any infos Frank
