I have been experimenting with SnapMirror to tape mostly for initial mirroring to a remote site. As far as I know there is no way to catalog a SnapMirror tape, and you would have to restore the whole volume not just a missing or corrupted file. Also I believe you will need ONTAP 6.1 for your configuration to work. You can backup a snapmirrored volume, but you need to use a snapshot that already exists in the volume everytime you do the backup, because you cannot create a "snapshot_for_backup" in a read only volume. We have a similar situation and we use hourly.0 to backup the snapmirrored volumes. We have implemented a SnapMirror strategy where a small site in Atlanta is mirroring to our larger filer in our data center in Raleigh. We are doing this in place of tape backups because there is no local IT staff to switch out tapes and keep an eye on things. The mirror seems to be working fine, but I had hoped to be able to send the snap mirrored volume to tape once a week so that they could be sent off site. The problem is that the destination volume is listed as "snapmirrored," not "online" like the rest. Veritas will back up all of the other volumes, but not the snapmirrored one. It's not a big deal because I have all of the data in two places, but it would be nice to also have a current copy of the data an underground in a vault. Same thing happened to me 2 days ago on a F740 filer. Last thing on LED was 28 ops/sec. Couldn't get to it whatsoever. Had to reboot by shutting down power supplies. Filer had been up over 320+ days. I called NetApp and they said they could do nothing since there was no core dump. There was only a "bounds" file with "0 0" in it. There's a synch button on the front of your filer. On the 700 series, it's the little hole under the LEDs. When you press that, the filer should drop to the ok prompt. Concurrent File Write Access on Filer CIFS

For Filer CIFS, when concurrently several clients open the same file, then thees clients (all these clients have write access on the file) try to modify and write to this file differently almost at the same time. quota -v no longer works

Hi! After adding a new volume to my filer, with quotas etc, when a user issues the quota -v command on his UNIX machine he gets {dv40ss5::simonc} [5] % quota -v Disk quotas for simonc (uid 17xxx): Filesystem usage quota limit timeleft files quota limit timeleft {dv40ss5::simonc} [6] % Prior to the disk additions he would get the full quota report. Hi Simon, You need to have the remote filesystem mounted in order for quota -v to display the quota. Perhaps it was not mounted when you ran the command? We have a 740 filer running 6.0.1R3. Last night I got a page that "nothing was working". I headed into work and found that: 1) I could not telnet into the filer. 2) I could not get in through console either. 3) The display on the front of the filer said 850 ops but the activity led wasn't flashing at all. I figured I had no choice, so I shut it down hard and brought it back up. Everything came up fine. The message file posted a time stamp at 11:00pm but nothing at midnight (this was 1:30am). The message file also said that the fiiler was down for 6057 secs. The crash folder had one file in it called "bounds" and just contained "-1 -1". Hello Mike, Please note that NetApp does not currently support the Overland Data library in a FC SAN configuration. The configurations described in the attached URL http://www.netapp.com/osn/info/config.html#fcsan outlines how filers should be configured in our supported tape SAN environment. We require that the tape library login in as a NL Port.
