Just a couple of ideas. What is the path on the current NT server? If it's \\server_name\user_name, then you can use the cifs.home_dir option to make the filer automagically make that share work for everyone. If it is some other path like \\server_name\Users\user, then you can create a share called 'user' just like on your NT server. OR, if you don't want to alter the server_name part and you can take that NT server name out of production, you can make the name of the NT server a NETBIOS alias on the filer (look under options cifs, you'll find it) and then the filer will answer for the old server name as well as it's own. But again, this means that your old NT box will have to go out of production or have its name changed. You can script the change for your users using the command net user <username> /domain /homedir:\\filer\username A key trick to using the cifs.homedirs feature is to make sure that the user's home directory matches the username exactly, and also the folder has to be all lowercase regardless of how the user's name actually looks. Origin of F330

Can one of you internal geeks @ NetApp contact me off-list? I'd like to look up the history / origin of this F330, as it appears to possibly have been an engineering/internal/development unit (cards with revision / ECN #s, etc, tied to each major internal component, etc) and I'd like to see where it was before I got my hands on it.. Also - I thought the F330 faceplates were blue? This one is off-grey; almost like an older DEC machine... Need to find the floppy drive "cover" as well... Anyway, contact me off-list. Thanks. snapmirror

i am snapmirroring between a 740 with 5.3 and a 840 with 6.0. the initial snapmirror went ok and i set up for it to refresh again tonight. my question is, will the target volume automatically go offline or do i need to manually offline it? i manually offlined it before and it onlined it by itself when it was done mirroring. thanks roger leonard

Incremental snapmirror targets do not need to be offline. They are read-only by default until snapmirror is turned off. Todd, As of March 28, 2001 NetApp filers are certified for the complete storage of the VOB and View databases in a Unix, Interop or Windows only Rational ClearCase environment. It is no longer necessary to have the databases reside on local disk and Rational supports placing the databases on filers. My guess is the last time you spoke to Rational folks was prior to March 28, in which case they gave you the correct information. As you well know, filers natively support both CIFS and NFS making the use of Syntax TAS unnecessary. During our ClearCase certification testing there was no performance degradation when using a filer. In fact, we typically found the performance to be better than when using direct attached storage in ClearCase environments. We are currently working on performance benchmarks in order to document the performance gains achieved. Your read of the statement in the brochure is correct. It is true that both restrictions have now been removed. Using a filer with ClearCase also makes back-up and restore much easier due to NetApp SnapShots (not to be confused with the snapshot function in ClearCase). With SnapShots, the VOB database is locked for typically only a matter of seconds (exact time will depend on the size of the VOB). The March 28th certification includes use of filers with ClearCase Multisite as well. Hope this helps clear up any questions or concerns. Victoria J. You may also want to verify what snapshots you have lying around. We had a couple of old one that weren't going to go away naturally. Summary Cleanup

Since upgrading a filer to OT6.1, I've noticed a lot of these messages in the log file: Sat May 12 23:24:02 EDT [wafl_CP_proc:info]: Starting summary cleanup on volume vol1. Sat May 12 23:24:04 EDT [wafl_lopri:info]: Volume vol1, summary cleanup complete. They only occur for vol1, not vol0, an although they generally occur at 4 hour intervals I've also seem them occur 1/2 dozen times in 10 minutes. Can anyone explain what a "summary cleanup" is, why it was added in 6.1, and how come there's no real pattern to when they happen? Thanks, MD
