The following is an excerpt from the 5.3.4R2 Start Here Guide - page 29. You can download the PDF file from the NOW site in the software download section. ========== start excerpt ============ Starting with 5.3.2, Data ONTAP checks the consistency of parity when performing disk scrubbing. If it detects parity inconsistency, the following events take place: - A message is logged to /etc/messages indicating that there is parity inconsistency. When you see this message, it is important to call Technical Support for help in determining the root cause of the problem. - Data ONTAP enables block checksums to ensure data integrity. When checksums are enabled, there is some performance degradation. If checksums are incorrect, Data ONTAP generates an error message similar to this one: Checksum mismatch on disk 4.0, block 436964 A file named /etc/crash/parity_inconsistencies is created. It contains information about disk scrubbing, which helps Technical Support solve the parity inconsistency problem. ========= end excerpt =============== I hope this helps. We have Oracle running on our F720, F740 and F760 and have had no problems. NetApp and RDBMS (Oracle/Sybase)

Dear all... we are researching the purchase of a Network Applicance F740, for which one of the primary uses would be service of a commercial RDBMS (either Sybase or Oracle). Until I looked into this last week, I was unaware this was possible and officially supported... I'm very enthusiastic about the possibility - so far, feedback on this has been generally positive. Quentin, We are also using Alexandria (although we wish we had something else) - We discovered that direct NFS mounts to the Alexandria server to the Netapps works best. We backup each top level directory and its associated sub directories and it seems to work fine. Previous discussions (April 1999 - check the archives) have covered this pretty well: http://teaparty.mathworks.com:1999/toasters/2648.html probably sums it up best. But other mentions of 'nfs.udp.xfersize' in there are worth reading too. It goes without saying that you should check release notes too, to be sure that there are no bugs at the root of the question you had nor with the things talked about in the above mail from the archive. Log bugs if it doesn't work. 8) Remember to check all the settings on the clients: on the interfaces, the stack and the higher-level protocol as appropriate. Suns, by way of example, have oodles of things to set, as came up recently. The jury's still out on how much you can do on the client, but I'd say it's leaning toward 'quite a bit'. Also use whatever network tools you have, managed switches etc. to check for the usual problems with performance: collisions, duplex confusions, high broadcasts, other major traffic sources on the same or intervening segments. If you overlook something in this area then you might find tweaking the nfs.udp.xfersize is a retrograde change, against expectation. We are trying to backup 12 NetApp Filers using Alexandria. I was curious who else is trying to backup Filers with Alexandria and how they have implemented their solution. We have had a lot of troubles with doing Filer backups with Alexandria, especially with the Alexandria database. RE: Backing up a filer

Greg, If you want to use NetBackup with NDMP to back up the filer, you need to have at least one direct attached tape drive connected to the filer(not considering a three way NDMP backup using two filers with a tape device direct connected to the remote filer). You can dedicate one or more drives from an existing library controlled by NetBackup, or you can attach a new/different library to the filer(yes, the filer does support a locally attached library). Either the NetBackup host (NDMP client) or the filer can be direct connected to the robotic portion of the library(assuming the library has individual scsi ports for the connection). In the end, NetBackup ends up controlling the library either way. If the robot is direct connected to the NetBackup host via scsi, NetBackup controls it. If the robot is connected to the filer via scsi, the NetBackup host sends scsi cdb's via NDMP to the robot through the filer, thus the robot is still controller by NetBackup. clearcase & network appliance

is anyone using clearcase with remote storage pools on the network appliance? i've had the experience of keeping the storage pools local to the servers in the past, but with the new group i'm working in, i'm in the process of using the remote storage idea. in terms of $$s, scalability, backup, etc. i see a big plus. what are some experiences of other individuals doing this? i don't have enough data or experience to fall back on to convince other groups we're working with of the idea. any insight would be helpful (even if i have to go back to local storage, grrr). charly
