Sun Client Maximum Throughputs

Do any of our customers out there have some measurements of Sun client throughput? I thought I could use a 2 x 400MHz Ultra Enterprise E250 with a new Sun GbE card in it as a killer client, and I find that with V3 32KB UDP packets, the sucker rolls over at ~30 MB/s with 2 CPUs pinned at 99% in system time. This *sucks*. In an experimental filer setup reading from memory (all cached data) the F760 CPU is at 20%. I am totally client bound. Has anyone sized Sun clients out there? Are the PCI clients dogs? Is the new GbE card from Sun a loser? Should I go grab a new Alteon card for the Sun? What is your killer high performance client? It seems a function of the Sun E250 - 100BaseT seems to scale only to 30 MB/s before running out of CPU... Broken-hearted in Amsterdam, beepy

Wincenter Pro, excel 97 and netapp problem

Hi, I am new on this list. Let me introduce myself - my name is Krzysztof Miller, I work for Lucent Technologies CIO dept, in Poland. We have F520 running 5.1.2 . Did anybody had problems with Wincenter Pro (or Cytrix Winframe) and NetApp ? We have following problem - when excel 97 session is open when you log off from wincenter, it deletes file, which is opened. Two volumes with same name, DOT 5.2.1, how do I fix?

Hi guys, We're running DataOnTap 5.2.1 on a bunch of F330s. One of them had a disk failure this weekend, and since I was in for a power shutdown, I figured I'd just swap in a spare disk from a returned filer (upgrade to an F740). The problem is the before the old F330 was returned, we never did any of the disk commands to make all the disks into spares. We just copied the data off and shutdown the system. So I took one of these disks from the old Filer and did the usual disk swap, disk swap procedure to put it into the Filer with the failed disk. And now comes the problem. The Filer sees the new disk and scans it in, but hey! It's got volume info on it, and it won't initialize the disk and just use it on the new filer. Sigh... I've tried using the command 'disk fail 8a.4' but it won't let me because it's part of a volume. So I look at the volume status and I get this: swtoast> vol status Volume State Status Options vol0 online normal root vol0 offline foreign partial Yup, *two* volumes, both named 'vol0' and I can't get rid of the foreign one. If I just do 'vol status vol0' I get the online volume listed. What I want to do is just a volume destroy, or a disk initialize without any questions asked. But I can't figure out how to do this. Any hints? I do have a call into NetApp, but I've been on hold for about 15 minutes already... Failure of rm -rf

Since we moved to 5.3 (actually 5.3.2R1P1) we see occasional failures in various Unix automated management procedures. I've finally traced this to the "rm -rf" command failing. On Solaris systems it fails with: rm -rf /<filer>/x rm: Unable to remove directory /<filer>/x/y/z: File exists On SGI systems the slightly more meaningful error message is /<filer>/x/y/z: Directory not empty However, just repeating the rm -rf command once more works perfectly and the directory tree has gone. I don't think it's anything to to with CIFS file locking since some of the directories are old and have not been used for a long time. Has anyone else seen this? Macs and Filers.

Does anyone know if it is possible for a cluster of Macs to see a filer? If that's not possible directly, do you know of any free-ware or not code that would allow it? Does anyone know of any cheat sheets for setting up a dedicated crossover gigabit ethernet between a filer and an HP-UX system? I've gotten as far as a good link light, but cannot get a ping to work. Thx, Graham

Hi! Does anybody know of a way to backup a specific snapshot using NDMP ? We're using 5.3.2 and up, Veritas NetBackup 3.11 and 3.2 Does anybody have experience with backuping Atria ClearCase ? I know there's a NOW article on that... Eyal.
