I think like most corporate web sites, it is usually up to date, but sometimes one group does get ahead of the other even in the most organized companies. I agree with you that PDF is, sadly, annoying but it is more-or-less the best standard out their currently. I don't know by "useless" text if you meant it was just not informative or you had difficulty reading it... you usually need to zoom in a level when using the Adobe Acrobat reader for it to be legible. IMHO, every web site should offer documentation in PDF, PS, MSWord, HTML, and plain TXT. Bruce

Well, I heard it is out. I went to the now.netapp.com site. I see the announcement, I go to the software library. ONTAP 3.1.6 is the latest recommended release? What happened to 4.3.1? I think something is broken. Either that, or NetApp is celebrating April 1st a little early. I noticed in the 5.0 announcement that they say the Exabyte Mammoth is only supported on the F630. Why would such a limitation be made? And while I'm here, I might mention that the PDF file format is quite possibly the second most annoying thing found on the internet, surpassed only by spam. PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format is one of the single -largest (and common) document file formats found outside of Word (.doc) -and ASCII (.txt). Try getting the latest release directly from the -Adobe web site. So release them at .txt files too! NIS Binding Problem

Has anyone experienced NIS binding problems on their filers? We have four filers (3 F330s & 1 F230) running Ontap 4.3R3 that have been locking out users on a few occasions this past week The UNIX servers and user workstations trying to access the filers are reporting "server not responding: RPC: Timed out" errors. There is not much helpful in the filer logs. In order to unhang the filer, we must manually rebind it to a different NIS slave server. -- John F. Kane

FP'98 + IIS 4.0 + NT4 + CIFS

Does anyone have some experience setting up an NT4/IIS 4.0 Web server with the FrontPage extensions, using a Netapp as the data store? According to Microsoft (and supported by our own tests), FrontPage will *not* work to a network share. In fact, many Microsoft server products will lose much of their functionality if they are not run on local disks. I'm pretty much convinced this is an NT issue and not a Netapp one (since we can't get FrontPage to work even when sharing a filesystem from another NT box). What are the alternatives? NFS on NT? We asked a Microsoft IIS engineer how MS handles the problem of distributed servers, and his response was "Oh, we just replicate all our data". :-/ -- Brian Tao (BT300, taob(a)netcom.ca) "Though this be madness, yet there is method in't"

No one is using the Frontpage 98 extensions to IIS, as they don't work over a network share. As Mike Patchen pointed out, Microsoft has promised to fix this in Frontpage 99. If this is really important to you, you should bring that up as a requirement to Microsoft. Andy Schulert <andyschu(a)microsoft.com> is the person to send your needs to. The people successfully using IIS with filers are currently using FTP - to allow users to upload web pages to their personal directories. With the filers, we also have created a special NT utility that "effectively" allows large # of directory quotas for this special situation. This is so you can do quotas for your web-hosting users. Using quotas on filers is apparently the only scalable quota solution available for NT today (according to people who use them).
