there is a way. "vscan options mandatory _scan {on|off}" - it does just you would expect it to do.
before i found this, i wrote a series of scripts (runs on a Sun) to monitor the vscan process and send warnings, etc when things happened, including turning vscan off when both scanners de-registered.

We have TrendMicro Server Protect for NetApp. It's okay, but I'm worried about the reliablity. Is there a way to have a filer turn of virus scanning if there are no longer any registered Anti-Virus scanners? We had the TrendMicro service fail during a dat update and nobody was able to read or write from the Filer until I got in that morning and realized what was going on.
