Follow up: Qtree snapmirror from 6.5 to 8.1 was the method we used. It worked great but took a bit longer than I expected to mirror 1TB. The F840 wasn't overloaded by the transfer, and the 2240-2 absorbed the data with ease.

rsync takes a long long time, but it works fine. This is all linux data, nfs.
