How exactly do you edit a file on the console rewriting the entire file then?

But you can! Of course you have to rewrite the entire file, but with a decent terminal emulator with a scroll buffer this isn't too hard. I did ask for ed/ex/vi/edlin, but my request fell on deaf ears. I wonder how hard it would be to use an editor written in Java (I now remember a quote from one of the netapp engineers fearing what will happen when users get a whiff of the fact that NetApps run Java.)
