Hi Simon
The way I would tackle this is indeed first of all bring the FAS-3020 to ONTAP 7.3.6.
Next resize the root volume to 205g or more. This is required in ONTAP 8.x and if it will pose a space problem the earlier you know the better.
Having done that fire of a full autosupport and keep a copy somehwere useful. That way if there are any issues or questions you'll have a copy of the config to work with. Also copy the /etc/hosts and /etc/rc files to your admin box.
The next thing I'd do is to use the lunserials script to retrieve and keep a copy of the LUN serials. This script can be found at http://communities.netapp.com/docs/DOC-1754.%C2%A0 Check that the scipt has indeed produced the lunoffline, lunonline and lunserial files with sane contents.
Follow up by copying /etc/rc and /etc/hosts to /etc/rc.preupgrade and /etc/hosts.preupgrade. Modify the files to suit the new system (typically network ports have different numbers)
Having done this I would then halt the old filer, and in maintenace mode do a mailbox destroy local and mailbox destroy partner. Then I would remove all disk ownership.
Then halt again and switch of the old FAS-3020, label cables and remove them and then put it on the desk of your nearest bean counter.
Rack the new FAS-3240's, cable everything up. Switch on one of the controllers which is going to replace the old-FAS3020 and boot it into maintenance mode. Take ownership of all the disks and check that you can see all the disks.
Check once again that you can see all the disks.
Now boot up the box normally. The FAS-3240 will boot Data ONTAP from Compact Flash. Whilst the FAS-3240 can support Data ONTAP 7.3.6 they ship nowadays with 8.0.2.
Capture the output whilst the FAS-3240 boots up. You should see some text along the lines of 'Assuming NVRAM swap' which means it will pick up the old volumes and not try to tamper with LUN serial numbers etc.
Once it has booted up I would use the date command to correct the date. Run cifs setup and put the filer back in the domain.
Once this has been done do a lun show -v and check a couple of LUN's that their serial numbers are intact.
If they are not use the lunoffline and lunserial scripts to correct them.
You will see that you have inherited old licenses so enter the correct licenses.
Use fcadmin to configure any FC ports to run FCP protocol.
Check with ifconfig that you have the network connections you are expecting to have and that you can ping some hosts on each network along with the default gateway.
After this (re-)install the Data ONTAP 8.0.2 software. This step ensures everything is in sync. Halt the box and reboot.
If necessary update the BIOS.
Once you have rebooted ensure the SP has the latest firmware. There have been a lot of bad SP bugs and you don't want to become a bug statistic. Also this is the time to run sp setup and ensure the SP is working.
Finally install the ONTAP docs and ask the bean counters for a payrise.
I have doubtless missed something but I that is I think the general lay of the land.
Where you will find a PS guy invaluable is if there is a problem; doing this kind of thing regularly means that we have seen lots of things before and can more readily get back in the air.
regards, good luck and happy filing! Kenneth

Hi all,
I have a query regarding a head-swap upgrade which I've never attempted before, so any help would be much appreciated!
We currently have a single-head FAS3020 running a small number of SATA and FC shelves. The head is EOL and so I've been able to persuade my bean counters to buy me a pair of FAS3240 heads to use as an HA pair. We're keeping all the disk shelves, so I "just" need to swap the heads over. From what I've read, it's best practice to upgrade the old head to the version of ONTAP that the new head will run, but we don't have that option as the 3020 won't run ONTAP 8 and the 3240's won't run ONTAP 7! This is our central storage system, using CIFS, NFS and LUNs over FC, so getting it wrong isn't really an option. Is this going to be achievable or should I call professional services in? I'd rather do this myself if possible, not least because PS are rather expensive... Can I just copy the latest ONTAP onto the existing vol0 and shut the head down, power up the new head and make the disks owned by the new head? I assume I'll also have to tell the FC switches about the new WWPNs for the LUNs to work. Will that work or will I end up with a very large, very expensive brick?
Thanks! Simon. _______________________________________________ Toasters mailing list Toasters@teaparty.net http://www.teaparty.net/mailman/listinfo/toasters
