What is the actual problem? Is there a lock that failed to release when a system crashed? NetApp has helped me find a command that lists the locks lock_dump -h. We have had this problem for a long time and then we received a new rpc.lockd from Compaq and the problem went away until we got a patch set that replaced it and the problem came back. I am trying to get a new compatible rpc.lockd for our current patch level from Compaq and hope this will fix it. We have 250+ clients using the mailboxes on a NetApp 760 box.

If you need to have text-based NFS-mounted client mailboxes, the only reliable option is to use a mailbox format which doesn't require locking, such as Maildir.
Depending on what access is provided to the mail spool, yes, maildir is a safer, viable format.
Check procmail for to use as an LDA for this or look a qmail for some other thoughts on how this is done.
But not all instances can work with this. If you have shell users that do funky stuff based on the mbox format, this can be a problem. There are plenty of other cases where maildir is not a viable alternative to mbox.
I hope you find what you need.
