I haven't been following this thread carefully. But obviously I will have to figure out what is going on in this area before I consider upgrading ONTAP.
It is unfortunate the support for the web/java administration might be going away. To be fair, it seems to have been slowly degrading over the years - perhaps it is just too hard to maintain.
I guess there are two (or more) types of users for netapp products. One needs the absolute highest level of performance, and has staff dedicated to achieving it. Likely they mostly use CLI. The other is just looking for high performance storage that is easy to administer. Likely these users do not have dedicated staff, and use mostly GUI and CLI only when required.
I fall in the latter group. And for better or worse, do not have a windows box on my desk. Going forward am I going to have to set up a windows virtual machine just to have easy admin of our netapp boxes?
I like and value the "toasters" aspect of these boxes. A toaster is a nice and easy to use appliance. Is netapp perhaps diverging from the easy to use appliance model?

There is no way to add FilerView back into 8.1. The JVM was not included in ONTAP 8.1.
For 7-mode, System Manager 2.0 is the only tool available. In Cluster-mode, you can do an http://<cluster management LIF> and get to an GUI implementation of the CLI. This is the same as the advanced tab in System Manager.

I thought all you linux guys were command line only? Now we REALLY know who the filerview users are..
JK, I am sure there will be a workaround..

This is the valid point and I suggest you bring it up here:https://communities.netapp.com/community/products_and_solutions/storage_mana..., or directly in this thread:https://communities.netapp.com/message/64385#64385
Hmm ... wait ... System Manager 2.0 is browser based; when you start it locally it actually launches browser. Have you tried to connect to it externally? May be it is possible to tweak shortcut to do it? Again, you could ask in the above community, NetApp folks are really responsive (although right now there is a problem that E-Mail alerts do not work, you will have to check for replies manually).
I would be really interested if this (remote access) worked.

Justin,
I understand SM2.0 is out and have installed it on both my desktop and my laptop. What I was hoping to avoid was having to install bits on every single system we would want to be able to configure the filer from. We have 5 people on our IT team. With the new method everyone of them has to install the package on their RH desktop at work if they want to do this, and also their laptop if they have one and access from home.
One of the other issues is a couple of them use Ubuntu or Mac boxes from home. This package isn't supported for those. We'll end up having to install it somewhere else and they will have to run rdesktop or vnc to get to it. This is a lot of hassle for support compared to just pulling up a web browser from virtually any OS and running FV.

Jeff,
System Manager 2.0 is out and supported for 8.1. You can create volumes, shares, etc with it.

Andrey,
I may have to do this. It is just considerably more work to set up a centralized server somewhere, possibly needing dedicated hardware, on a limited set of supported OS platforms. The old FV would allow connections from most web browsers with the proper java plug-in. Having to do all of this adds work and complexity compared to FV. I would rather have FV as an option.
Thanks,

Well ... DFM is free of charge today, so why not go for a central management server with RBAC?

Greetings,
I've got 8.1RC1 installed on a test filer. FilerView went away with 8.1 7-mode and we now have to use System Manager. I have 2 questions about this:
- Has anyone found a hack to make FilerView work such as copying
over files or directories from an 8.x system?
- If I only want to set up a centralized configuration that everyone
could see, would I have to set up a OnCommand Core package on a server? Right now I have to install the rpm on my linux box and a different setup on my PC. I have to tell it to go discover all of the filers for each installation. This makes supporting this a pain for our support team. Everyone has to install it on their PC and desktops in order to be able to manage the 8.1 filers. It really seems a waste to have to do so many installs, and then tell it to go find all the needed filers. I hope there is a better way :-)
I'm only looking for FilerView capabilities to create aggregates/volumes/shares, etc. I'm not needing monitoring or other advanced tools right now.
Thanks,
Jeff
